Im looking at getting a flashgun in the next few weeks but i know they can be expensive and to be honest i dont know how much i will use it. Im thinking about getting something along these lines.

I realize its not going to be an amazing flash gun for the price but i cant afford much at the moment seeing if anyone has purchased one of these or along the same lines and what they thought about it

They are good for that money, manual only, you need the Nikon fit type, I have been using them off camera with rf602 triggers (also on ebay again you need the Nikon fit ones )

I used to use a Nissin Di622 for Nikon and it was superb. Half the price of a Nikon unit but still worked in auto ittl mode.

Using in manual I personally found to be a bit hit and miss. Satisfying when it worked, but frustrating when not.

If you're stuck for budget you could always get a jessops 36 something. They come in Nikon flavours and are nice and cheap.

I borrowed one before i bought the Nissin unit, but found it misfired occasionally. Great for the price though.

Nikon sb-400 gets very good reviews. It's small realatively powerful and a lot better than built in nikon flashes.

It does bounce as well doesn't it? Nice size for smaller Nikon bodies.

Yes a clever bounce system. Got mine and a diffused it works great. Quick recycle times with 2 aa batteries, ittl on the nikon is clever so only uses the power it needs, so it rearly shoots at full power. I love the portability and uncomplicated setup. Ken Rockwell does a review on his site and that's what sold it for me.

By the way I use it on a d3.. so not just for small bodies.

I have a Nissin Di622 I haven't used it much but it alwayls does what I ask it to doplus it has a built in slave mode. So when you use the built in flash you can use it of the camera with no other gadgets.

dont bother with the SB-400 as it doesnt swivel. Its fine when talking pictures in landscape but in portrait you have to try and bounce it off a wall which can be awkward.

The YN-460-II isn't brand specific, it will work with any camera that has a regular hotshoe.

I went for a second hand SB-400 for my D3000 (had one for my D90 first, then 'upgraded' to an SB-700 for it). It's a great little unit, but as has been said it can't tilt on portrait. I've seen some ingenious bits of paper/business cards being used as deflectors to combat this though!!!
