Need a dslr for around 200-250 second hand... What to buy!?

So I'm on the hunt for a friend on what to buy as a first dlsr they have around the 200 mark to spend but not sure on what to go for. I've been offered a Nikon d40 with 18-55 lens and bag for 200 but don't have much background on the camera. So what can you guys recommend for me??
 
At that price D70 is another option (Grays have a couple in seemingly good condition) or if he can stretch the budget a bit MPB have a D2H and a couple of D200's but you will need to add the lens to the cost.
 
Do you have a brand preference? Second hand dslrs from all manufacturers can be had in that price range and all are capable. Do you have friends that have bought into a system making it easier to share lenses etc, any preference for video etc?
 
Urm not too fused on make. Just something easy to use. I have the Nikon 3100 and she likes the use of that??

The Nikon D3100 with kit lens is £299.99 at the moment at Amazon, with a £35.00 cashback. So if they can stretch the budget another £15.00 from £250.00 maximum to £265.00 they can buy brand new instead of 2nd hand?

Nikon D80 for between £140 - 190 + 18-55mm lens £70

MPB or FFordes will do you a D3100 and kit lens for around £250 or you will get a D3000 and kit for a bit cheaper.

If she likes the camera then that's a good starting place
 
If you use Nikon probably better to look at those bodies as you can use each other's lenses. If she's interested in video it's definitely worth looking at the Sony SLTs.
 
Pentax K20D, pro-sumer weather sealed body with great firmware. I miss mine :-(
