Well, i want to replace my Tamron 55-200mm. I've looked at the canon and sigma offerings and im confused over the models so i dont want to get the wrong one. I shoot football (soccer) matches btw, ECGL and SW peninsula so far.

I see the Sigma 70-300mm apo can be bought for £145

Or i could push the budget maybe to a canon equivalent.
£360 - USM + IS http://www.b4utele.com/products/all/all/12138.htm

£250 - USM Only http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/12278/show.html

£200 - no IS or USM http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/12276/show.html (Wow, thats damn ugly!)

Which lens has the best bang for your buck? Im not sure i need IS and USM so tempted by the cheaper two.

have a look at the canon 55-250mm its a very good lens for the price

Both the canon's out perform the sigma, the only difference between the two canons apart from the focal length is that the 70-300 IS is a bit sharper.

Yeah Mark, i am a bit dubious abut those bargain priced websites.

I think guys what i'll do is maybe try to get one of the Canon's off of this site, hopefully the IS if my budget allows. My father inlaw has just bought one of those, so i should get to see what the thing is like.

Cheers guys,

Not sure on the sites but I would go for the canon 70-300 IS USM....its fantastic for the (normal) price

Personally, i would stay away from simply electronics, just had a bad experience with them and customer service, what customer service!!

Please enlighten us. That surprises me, since there is a link to their site at the top of this page.

That's generated by Google Ad's.

Whilst some people have had an OK experience with SE an awful lot have reported horror stories. They are a Far Eastern importer masquerading as a UK company, basically you pays your money and takes your choice!

Adey, have you thought of saving up for the Sigma 100-300 f4? It goes for about £500 second hand and would be a far better option for sport.

Thats too far out of my range im afraid, i'd need to be earning from photography first before i start making investments like that. One day maybe;)

Cheers guys!

What's the price of the new Tamron 70-300 VC USD in the UK? From prelim reviews so far, it's rated very well and sharper than its Nikon & Canon equivalents (from photo.net review: The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC is surprisingly good optically. It is merely a little bit less sharp compared to my Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S, stopped down to f/5.6.)

Another vote for Canon 70-300 IS. While I have no experience with any of the others, I did do my research and ended up with this lens, and I've been happy with my choice. I'd certainly recommend having IS, that's for sure, and as such if you can't stretch to the 70-300, then look at the 55-250.
