ND Grad filters for Cokin P

Guys,

I have some Cokin 'P' grey grads (which were sold as ND grads) but they're pretty dense - about a stop at least - so I'm after something a bit more subtle.

Just watched David Noton's 'chasing the light' DVD and he was talking about 0.3 filters. I take it the '0.3' refers to a third of a stop? What are your recommendations for a set of grads in terms of stop rating? I note that Cokin doesn't rate its filters in increments of a stop - they seem to be ND2/4/8, which are quite big gaps.

Also, can anyone suggest a cheap interweb shop that'll do them at a good price? I have no porblems with Cokin-copies - the ones I have aren't 'official' Cokin filters but they work perfectly. They're just a bit dramatic!! :)
 
ime intersted in this as well after seeing some pics by a polish snapper

ive no problem with holder copys but not sure its a good idea with optics?
 
Not had a problem with copies as of yet, but then again I haven't really been using them that much for final prints.

Just looked at the LEE filters ND grad set and its £133 - I know the quality is obviously very, very giood but not sure if I can justify it to the missus. Imagine it...

Have a look at 7dayshop, they have outstanding prices on Cokin and Kood filters.

Kood will fit Cokin P sizes. However, even Cokin at this store are very cheap. Of course, I do believe them to be a grey import business. I have done business with them a while ago, got some P sets, and they were quick, prompt and the price was a bonous.
 
7 day are out of stock of Cokin ND grads at the moment (P series) but are a reasonable price (£9.99)

I can recommend a cracking little photographic shop in Denton (outskirts of Manchester)....

I've purchased quite a few filters there. He also sells KOOD square filters, which are a few pounds cheaper than the Cokin P equivalent. He doesn't advertise them on the website as his Kood stock is intermittent, but it's well worth you contacting him.
 
Have a look at Surrey Photography on Ebay, loads of Cokin and Hoya.

I can thoroughly recommend the Teamwork link. They supply Hitech filters, which are one of photography's best kept secrets. They are the same size as Cokin P filters but IMO much better quality (Neutral Density really is neutral, whereas Cokin "ND" really do have a magenta cast).

Must be expensive then?

NO! Teamwork are currently selling ND grad kits of 0.3,0.6 and 0.9 (1,2 and 3 stop) filters in either hard or soft graduations for just £30.00! The filter holder is a bit expensive, but happily these filters fit the Cokin P filter holder perfectly!

I purchased both kits from Teamwork many years ago and have been so pleased (which is unusual for me) that I've absolutely no desire to look at the very expensive Lee system and I certainly wouldn't go back to using Cokin!

Which Hitech filters fit the Cokin P holders? The 100mm or the 85mm?
 
The HighTech 85mm's are awesome, no colour cast (the Cokin's are dire).

IMHO (and I've used them all from Lee to Kood) HighTech are the ones to get.
 
Another vote for Hitech certainly no colour cast, but then again my photos are still rubbish:thinking:
 
While we are speaking about Cokin filters I just bought the P kit with a grey grad filter (a P120 I think). Does anyone know how many stops of light the grey bit cuts the light by?

the 85mm hitech fit the cokin P holder , but being 1mm wider than cokin P filters they are a little bit tight .

a whack with a hammer soon sorts them out :D

I fit them OK to Kood's P-filter holder and the official Cokin wide angle holder.

These links your posted are for the same Cokin holders that I have and use.

I have been contemplating moving to Lee filters, but that would be a huge £££ investment, which I can't afford at the moment. So, Hitech came in 2nd place for my upgrade, but I would love to save the £140 from having to buy 2 holders and 4 lens mounts and put that money towards to the filters.

You can buy converters that let you use 85mm square filters in the Lee filter holder.

If you need a polariser, look at the Heliopan 105mm rather than the Lee - it's much less expensive (I can't say it's cheaper as it's still a pricey piece of glass)
One huge advantage that you get with the Lee holder/filters is no vignetting with ultra-wide angle lenses.
 
Hey, thank you for that bit of inforamation; very useful indeed.

I think :thinking: my best plan would be to just get the Format holder with whatever filters I use most, and that would be the ND and ND grads. All in all, should not cost me more than a £200.

As for the CP, I currently use Marumi, while no where near the quality of top brands, but it is giving me some pretty good results.
