Hi guys,

I'm looking at getting a 10-stop filter for my Canon 600d. I took a look on Amazon, but was really baffled by the differences in them. Despite all saying 10-step they seemed to have different mm's on them. I want to be able to put one onto both my 24-105mm and 50mm.

I'm not sure I mind whether I get the square or round ones, but can anyone perhaps give me some guidance on the best ones to get right now.

The 'mm' quoted is the thread fitment size, nothing to do with focal length.

Check your thread size, it should be written on the side of the lens. The 50mm is a 58mm thread (if its the f/1.8) and the 24-105 is a 77mm I should imagine so you'll need two if they are the round ones.

The square filters will have the width quoted in mm. For both the 50 and the L lens the 80 ish mm will be ok, but you'll need to buy a holder.
 
alternatively you could buy the biggest filter (77mm) and a step down ring, maybe two if they dont make a 77 - 58
 
I'd probably go for the 77mm for the zoom lens, and this is the more likely option of lens on the day. So, in terms of the quality / make...are there any you would recommend? Would it better to go for a flat 10 stop, or a variable?

Why do you feel you need a filter for both lenses?

The zoom range covers the standard, surely?

Don't go for a variable filter. It has had some very bad reviews.

Personally I would go for a screw in version; 77mm thread for the zoom.

Mine is a LCW ND-500 from Premier Inks. Reasonably priced and seems good enough. I think its only 8 or 9 stops, however.

Bear in mind that it is a pretty advanced piece of kit and you will still need to learn the basics before using it!
