I'm off on my hold is June and we are staying right by the sea. I've been looking at long exposure shots of the see, and water in general. However, as a novice what filter would a need for shooting in daylight. I was looking at buying a b&w 10 stop, but do I need this? I have seen great shots taken with just a 3 stop.

Could someone give me a quick heads up as I don't want to spent £80 -£100 on a 10 stop if t is not needed, many thanks

Get a 10 stop Hoya for 40-50. They are brilliant

In bright daylight yes, you'll need a 10 stop, at dawn, or dusk you might get away with a 3 stop.

Don't forget that you've got to get your base exposure right before you lengthen it, eg you might need ND grads to bring the sky back enough, a blown sky without a filter will still be a blown sky with a long exposure, it is about the relative brightness.

Have a look at my blog post on long exposures, it will give you a sample workflow to make sure you get the best out of your shots on holiday, http://www.markmullenphotography.co.uk/blog/2012/8/long-exposure-photography---my-tips

I used to a multi coated 77mm B+W but sold it on as I had sold the lens I used with it.

It was this one.

I then had a need for another one after buying a new lens and went for this one, it's available in various filter sizes. Much cheaper than the B+W and I can't see any difference.

I bought a Haida slim 10 stop ND filter and have been delighted with it, especially for the price. I really didn't want to pay out £100 on something I'd use pretty rarely. I've not been disappointed.
