I bought some cheap ND filters a 4 and 8 grade. I tried doing some sea shots with some rocks around to make it get the effect of mist like some on here but all my pictures come out purple.

Could anyone help on how to do the pictures and what are the best filters to get for this type of shot.

Cheers Dan

ND4 is a 2 stop reduction, and the ND8 is a 3 stop reduction.

These wont be enough to reduce the water into a mist on a normal bright day. You need to either buy a 10 stop reduction, or shoot later in the day when the light is restricted.

The purple colour cast is caused by cheap filters (I have some too). This is easily fixed in PS with a WB adjustment. Or in camera with a custom WB setting.

If buying some ND Filters, which would you recommend and what make?

So, if i wanted nice quality ones, threaded, what should i go for?

For the misty water shots I use the B&W ND110 for the 10 stop work, that’s a screw in filter. But LEE have produced a square slot in 10 stopper that’s supposed to give excellent results, but is made of glass (slots in to a filter holder), so more fragile. I contemplated changing to the Lee Big Stopper as you can easily add graduated filters, (you can with the screw in type but more of a faf), but the fragility put me off a bit. (I’m heavy handed so stayed with the B&W :D).

You could of course stack various cheaper filers, but you will increase the colour cast and drasticly increase vignetting. I'd also do a search for welding glass. :)

Of the dark ND filters, this one is very good, and relatively cheap - LightCraftWorkshop ND500MC. It's 9-stops, pretty neutral and multicoated, unfortunately 77mm only ATM http://www.premier-ink.co.uk/photog...raft-workshop-77mm-nd500mc-filter-p-2927.html

The other one I like the look of is the Heliopan (from Teamwork?) but I've not tried it. Or there's the B+W. For square filter systems, the Lee Big Stopper.

The Heliopan are very good German made again mulit coated schott glass screw in 10 stop filters and are available most others are on back order

Thanks guys for all your knowledge in this area. Sorry i havnt been on to reply to you sooner i have been very busy at university. they were cheap ebay filters maybe invest in some better quality ones.

Cheers Dan
