Evening all.

I am looking to get some ND filters to use for long exposures. I am going on holiday soon and would like to take some long exposures of the sea.

I don't really know a great deal about ND filters, so wondered if someone could point me in the right direction please.

I have a Nikon D3100 with 55-300mm lens, 18-55mm kit lens.

Would this set off eBay do the job at all? I don't really know how much to spend or which makes are the better ones and even if there are cheaper options which do just as good a job?

Many thanks for any help.

Gaz.

You could try a fader ND to start with, there are cheap FOTGA brand ones on ebay that won't break the bank as you get your head around what you need for serious ND work before you fork out big money for a Big Stopper.

Thank you both for your posts.

Steve - I have ordered one of those filters off eBay today for £7 so will see how I get on.

Mark - Thanks for the article. I may drop you a PM if you don't mind, at some point, to perhaps ask you a few questions as I am a bit of a novice when it comes to this.

Thanks again.

Bear in mind you'll get some hideous colour casting with the cokin (pink if I remember) that you'll never really get rid of - however, as something to experiment with and see if it's what you want to do more of, it won't hurt. Then you'll realise the Lee filter system is the way to go :-)

What is responsible for automatically creating the links in my post #2???

Yes, I now see this after looking in the source code - not impressed with this.
I also see in post#1 that the words 'this set' have been linked to an ebay seller's offerings. That's rather random..
Guess this isn't my kind of forum. Affiliate ads are one thing, but I don't want my words to be turned into unsolicited commercial linking (SPAM) which makes money for someone other than me..

The first link in post #1 was added by the OP, not the skimming software.
The others are just skim links; no different to a context sensitive add, but probably less obtrusive as you're not bombarded with graphics.
