ND Filters - advice needed

Decided I ought to give some ND Grads a try, but need a few questions answered before I hit the buy button !

I'm looking at the Hitech filters, seem to be recommended by quite a few folk on here, I'd be using them on a 5D / 17 - 40mm with a 77mm filter thread, but..............

What size should I get ? - 84 x 110 or 100 x 125 mm

Glass filters are just ££££'s - so it would have to be resin, wonder how robust these would be in use ?

Not sure if there are any other considerations beyond a suitable holder, hopfully some one will point me in the right direction.

PS I'm also looking to get a plain ND 0.9 filter - would a hitech slot in be OK, or is a screw in recommended for long exposures ?
 
I think you'll need the 100mm size for the wide angle lens that you're using. I would recommend the Lee Filter holder combined with the Hi-tech filters. If you want to get a plain ND aswell, then get a 100mm slot in one aswell.
 
Forgot to say , you may need a 77mm wide angle adaptor to connect the holder to the lens.
