Hey all
Quick question regarding 3.0 neutral density filters.
Its my birthday next tuesday and the girlfriend is going to get me a neutral density filter so I just wanted your opinions on what lens you would you use it with ? I have a nikon 18-105mm, nikon 35mm and a sigma 10-20mm. Ideally I'd like to use it for landscapes so Im thinking the sigma but thats a 82mm thread so alot more expensive and their turning out to be hard to find. Aswell as landscapes and seascapes what is a good subject to use the filters on ?
Opinions much apreciated
Joe

I'd say the sigma. Plus that way if you buy adapter rings you can then use it on all the other lenses too

I'd be very careful that your chosen ND filter will work on the 10-20 without vignetting - there should be plenty of people who've tried, so a quick search will work - Hoya Pro-1 is probably the only choice. It might be best to alternatively consider a 100mm square filter system (Lee, Hitech, etc etc), although the initial costs are high, the different adapter rings for each lens size is very cheap, and you can consider things like Grads.

Cheers lads although it will have to be a screw in filter as its cheaper and she hasnt got much money, actually is it cheaper than getting the filter, adpator ring and holder ? I'll have a look.

From a price point I not really sure, I use the cokin p series which I know it not the best but it works well for me, if you shop around you can get a kit of p series ND for about £55-60 this is holder, adapter ring and 1,2&3 stop ND's now I'm not sure on the price of circular ND's but I know I paid £55 for a Hoya CPL recently

I recently picked up a B+W 10 stop for my 18-105 ( 67 ) , Im more than happy with it.

TBH I really would go for one of the slot in ones like the new hitech one or the big stopper, for a number of reasons. The main one would be that when the filter is on, you can't really see down the viewfinder as it's too dark, so you have to take it on and off to recompose etc, a screw thread filter would get boring fast if you keep taking it out. A square filter will also mean easier compatibility with grads and other filters with less vingetting down the line. A square filter would also provide a more elegant solution to using the filter with different lenses - I'm not a fan of step up rings TBH.

Sorry for the delay everyone ive been away and thanks alot for your replies.
Right after reading all your posts Im definately going with the square slide in filters, only problem is Ive been reading alot about vignetting with 10-20mm sigma. I dont really fancy cutting off 2 slots on the filter holder as alot of people suggest, what if I want to stack filters in the future ? surely theres a super wide filter holder ? Ive looked for one but dont fully understand them, any suggestions ?

Ok Ive been having a good read up, I was going to just order the Cokin z pro series as Ive been reading you dont get any vignetting even at 10mm with that holder but also Ive just read alot of posts about the horrible colour casts you get with cokin nd filters which you do not get with the Lee ones, soooooooo Im going to go with Lee I think. Can anyone tell me what Lee holder I need for my sigma 10-20mm so I dont get any vignetting even at 10mm please ? Ive been looking at them but cant work out whats best for that lens with regards to vignetting. Im desperate as want to get them before my holiday on friday.
Thanks alot in advance you lovely people.

P.s Can I use Lee filters with a cokin filter holder or vice versa ? Or hitech filters with cokin holder etc ?

I think you need to aim for standard Lee kit, just google Lee foundation kit. These are pretty pricey, but you might find a good deal in classifieds (I believe you just missed one) or on fleebay or very occasionally on gumtree....

As far as I'm aware it takes 100mm filters which are also produced by hitech, don't really know about Cokin, but I think it might be the same size as Z Pro series filters.

Thanks Mariusz. I was looking at all these different Lee kits and couldnt work out what one I needed so thanks for that. I might get the heliopan 3.0nd for the holiday and get the lee kit when I get back.

Thanks alot Richard I might go for this, is this 1 meant to be any good ?

Yes. None of these things is perfect, but the Heliopan is one of the best and gets good rep
