ND filter gaskets- where can you get them?

I need to get some 100mm filter foam stick on gaskets for a few hitech ND filters I have. I’m wondering if there are any other places that may sell them as Hitech have them on their website for £4.79 but postage is £5 which seems a little high when we are talking about something that can fit in an envelope and is lightweight.

Your post piqued my curiosity as to why gaskets are needed, so looked it to read about possible light leaking around the edges......but that gaskets don't always work! Then read this:-

"Gaskets are not required if you are using the new Firecrest 100mm Filter holder"

Sounds like a design flaw in a first generation holder???

I’ve decided to move over to the Lee foundation holder. The hitech firecrest holder doesn’t need gaskets as there is a built in one but the Lee holder does need them.

Thanks, looks a bit better but still over £8 for some foam gasket. Anything relating to photography and it’s stupidly expensive for what it is.

DIY?

I only use screw in ND filters so I don't have this headache.

I must admit to moving to screw filters for long exposures for precisely this reason. Before that I made my own gaskets using foam tape. It was less than ideal because the tape was quite firm and it didn’t compress well meaning inserting / removing the filter from the holder was hard work. I suppose I could have given it more time and found more suitable tape but I threw in the towel after seeing red and nearly breaking the filter ring on a lens from the insertion force and slipping... bought a screw in 10 stop instead.
Perhaps give the tape a go if you’ve something that might work at home already?

You can get neoprene foam sheet (adhesive backed) in A4, 2mm thick for £2.80 with free postage on eBay. That was just the first I found, I am sure there will be many alternatives and you can cut your own.. Try looking at craft categories.
