ND Filter advice needed (sorry)

I know everyone has probably had enough of the ND filters by now, but I have Amazon vouchers left over from my birthday and I think the time may have come for an ND filter....but....

* I only have enough money for one filter (about £100)

* I'm only ever going to want to use it to take soft water (like sea and waterfalls)

*I only really have one lens that I think I will ever use it with and that's a Tamron 17-50 f2.8

Given the criteria above, does anyone have any suggestions?

As above, you don't need to spend £100 on one filter. Buy a Cokin P style holder and adaptor rings for <£10 which you use for every filter then look at Kood/Cokin square filters. Generally, having one each of ND2/4/8 (solid filters) and 2/4/8 grads will cover most requirements.
 
I've always used Kood/Cokin filters and not had any issues. I assume you'll be shooting in Raw anyway so if you're not happy with the colour it's a simple fix.
 
They're a magnetic system to attach the Manfrotto filter system - I can see them listed on Amazon but no one has reviewed yet so I'm assuming they're new out?

I'd choose a filter aiming for 2-seconds at f/16, ISO 100..
2 - 1 - 1/2 - 1/4 - 1/8 - 1/16 - 1/32 - 1/64 - 1/128 = 8-stop filter
.. it's then easy enough then to drop to 1/4-second or faster by either opening the aperture or upping the ISO.

Thanks Alistair- do you find this leaves a colour cast? I know I can correct it in light room but I dont find post processing easy at all so I'd rather not.

If you want a circular one then the zomei ultra slim is good and has very little colour cast. If you want square to use with a 100mm filter holder then the Firecrest ten stopper (ND 3.0) is great, even less cast than the Zomei, in fact very little indeed.
