National Anthem

:D

Been saying this for years mate. I know God Save The Queen is the British anthem but us English really need our own. Land Of Hope And Glory gets my vote. As an atheist I can't bring myself to sing a song which has nothing to do with my country and is only about religion and an outdated monarchy.

Another vote for Land of Hope & Glory

You could do much worse than

Hark when the night is fallin, hear, hear the pipes a'callin
Loudly and proudly callin' down thru the glen
There where the hills are sleepin', now feel the blood aleapin'
High as the spirits of the old highland men!
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland the mountain hame!
High may your proud standards gloriously wave!
Land of the high endeavour, land of the shining river,
Land of my heart, forever, Scotland the brave!

High in the misty highlands, out by the purple islands,
Brave are the hearts that beat beneath Scottish skies!
Wild are the winds to meet you, staunch are the friends that greet you
Kind as the light that shines from fair maidens eyes!
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland, my mountain hame!
High may your proud standards gloriously wave!
Land of the high endeavour, land of the shining river,
Land of my heart, forever, Scotland the brave!

Far off in sunlit places, sad are the Scottish faces,
Yearnin' to feel the kiss of sweet Scottish rain!
Where tropic skies are beamin, love sets the heart adreamin',
Longin' and dreamin' for the homeland again!
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland, my mountain hame!
High may your proud standards gloriously wave!
Land of the high endeavour, land of [the shinin' river,]
Land of my heart, forever, Scotland the brave!

It's a very good point, but if pubs etc aren't allowed to fly the cross of St. George because of fears of ailienating the imigrant population and the ties it has (apparently) with footy hooliganism, what chance do we have of being allowed our own English national anthem?

Land of Hope and Glory for me too. Much more inspiring.

i know plenty of people from many different cultures and countries who have settled here, and they all are proud of this fine nation, apart from those terrorist types ;) . take the post office owner who fought for our language! its a massively complicated situation, patriotism, and iv read recently interesting information that says that patriotism is one of the things that is an enemy of humanity, but, that aside, people who get along with other people regardless of colour, creed, religion, belief, ideology ect, are the real heroes of this country, the man who loves the guys at his local pakki shop, and the indian fella who runs a youth club for anyone who wants to come, they are the heroes. however, they do not support the monarchy, and to a point, neither do I. which is why i find the "god save the queen" song abit silly. I would give my life for the monarchy, but that is due to my own foolishness. My point is that there are alot of different people in this country, who are damned proud of each other, and that is the reason that land of hope and glory should be the national anthem. because the only people worth loving and believing in, are the people that believe in a better future for the whole of humanity, and they will come in the form of people from many different countries and religions, but they will all believe in better. and that is what that song is about. good people deserve hope, and thats it.

But you do support an anthem with the line "God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet"?

For me it has to be Jerusalem. The image that song creates in my mind is just so perfect of this country it often brings a tear to my eye.

Edit: Watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GRaKUD2rxs though does portray out national anthem in a better light!

+1 for Jerusalem

quite like guide me oh thou great Jehovah but it wouldn't really be a good anthem, and might give Jehovah's witnesses the wrong idea tbh I mostly like it cos we sang it really loud in school

I know, but anytime I've heard it at a sports event it's the shortened version which doesn't include that verse

I, as a Scot, say you should have your own English anthem and we all, as the UK, should have our national anthem too.

You folks should never have tolerated the anti St. George thing that came from gov. It is an affront to you and an outrage.

If anyone feels offended (and I doubt if there are many) by the St. George's cross, Saltire or Union flag then they are in the wrong country.

Billy was onto something here.....

Sham 69----Hurry up Harry.

Altogether now-----------------------------

WERE GOIN DOWN THE PUB.

CMON CMON
HURRY UP HARRY CMON
CMON CMON
HURRY UP HARRY CMON

WERE GOIN DOWN THE PUB.

Nuff said.
Pete.

personally i love the words and as mentioned earlier the imagery of jeruselem i think it would be a bit confusing to have another countrys (wartorn) city in our national anthem

my vote is for 'land of hope and dreams' by springsteen

the chorus is superb:woot:

Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
You don't know where you're goin'
But you know you won't be back
Darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave the rest

Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

I will provide for you
And I'll stand by your side
You'll need a good companion for
This part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past

Big wheels roll through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams

and the final bit of the song is great ;)

This train
Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This Train
Carries whores and gamblers
This Train
Carries lost souls
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'
This Train
Carries broken-hearted
This Train
Thieves and sweet souls departed
This Train
Carries fools and kings
This Train
All aboard

This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'

So you want a song named after a place in Israel to be the English national anthem!

Land of Hope and Glory gets my vote.

I am sure I have heard Jerusalem but cannot tie it up with the name.

It always struck me as odd having a name like that for our anthem.

Steve.

How about In The Mood by Glenn Miller? (as played at Peter Sellers' cremation, just as the coffin went through the curtains.)
Just try to imagine those Olympiads standing on the podium trying not to laugh.

Alternatively, how about Yellow Submarine? Everybody sings along to that.

But it's not about Israel really

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

English to the core but "flower of Scotland " before Scottish rugby internationals makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up- You only have to look at the faces of the players & the supporters to see how "motivational" it is..................................................................................................................................................................... It takes the English rugby team at least 10 minutes of the first half to subdue their passion!!!

Jerusalem would get my vote as an alternative

Lol @ failed flame :D

A song's name has nothing do to with its lyrics and message... as has already been pointed out. Oh, and "builded" is perfectly acceptable - listed as "poetic or archaic" in the OED.
