Been saying this for years mate. I know God Save The Queen is the British anthem but us English really need our own. Land Of Hope And Glory gets my vote. As an atheist I can't bring myself to sing a song which has nothing to do with my country and is only about religion and an outdated monarchy.

Well, i do look good in a kilt ...Scotland the brave!

But you do support an anthem with the line "God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet"?As an atheist I can't bring myself to sing a song which has nothing to do with my country and is only about religion and an outdated monarchy.

Syx. But you do support an anthem with the line "God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet"?![]()
It's a very good point, but if pubs etc aren't allowed to fly the cross of St. George because of fears of ailienating the imigrant population and the ties it has (apparently) with footy hooliganism, what chance do we have of being allowed our own English national anthem?

+1 for Jerusalem
quite like guide me oh thou great Jehovah but it wouldn't really be a good anthem, and might give Jehovah's witnesses the wrong idea tbh I mostly like it cos we sang it really loud in school
for JerusalemBilly was onto something here.....
Not seen that before![]()

i know plenty of people from many different cultures and countries who have settled here, and they all are proud of this fine nation, apart from those terrorist types. take the post office owner who fought for our language! its a massively complicated situation, patriotism, and iv read recently interesting information that says that patriotism is one of the things that is an enemy of humanity, but, that aside, people who get along with other people regardless of colour, creed, religion, belief, ideology ect, are the real heroes of this country, the man who loves the guys at his local pakki shop, and the indian fella who runs a youth club for anyone who wants to come, they are the heroes. however, they do not support the monarchy, and to a point, neither do I. which is why i find the "god save the queen" song abit silly. I would give my life for the monarchy, but that is due to my own foolishness. My point is that there are alot of different people in this country, who are damned proud of each other, and that is the reason that land of hope and glory should be the national anthem. because the only people worth loving and believing in, are the people that believe in a better future for the whole of humanity, and they will come in the form of people from many different countries and religions, but they will all believe in better. and that is what that song is about. good people deserve hope, and thats it.
For me it has to be Jerusalem.
So you want a song named after a place in Israel to be the English national anthem!
Land of Hope and Glory gets my vote.
I am sure I have heard Jerusalem but cannot tie it up with the name.
It always struck me as odd having a name like that for our anthem.
Steve.
But it's not about Israel reallySo you want a song named after a place in Israel to be the English national anthem!

And was Jerusalem builded here
Lol @ failed flame
A song's name has nothing do to with its lyrics and message... as has already been pointed out. Oh, and "builded" is perfectly acceptable - listed as "poetic or archaic" in the OED.
