Morning all,

I was wondering if NAS devices or enclosures came with the inherent ability to pass through data. I'm thinking of plugging a NAS into the homeplug network and then connect a device like a Roku or an Amazon Fire TV to the NAS via an ethernet cable as they'd be sat next to each other. I'm hoping that the Roku or Amazon Fire TV will connect to both data and the storage. I do have a spare gigabit switch but I'd like to keep clutter to a minimum. The NAS enclosure I'm thinking of getting is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-Shar...-Enclosure/dp/B008HNRD4I/ref=cm_cd_ql_qh_dp_t

Thanks!

The NAS in your link only shows one Ethernet port, how are you going to connect the NAS into the network?

Thanks. Shows what a numpty I am!

A small unmanaged switch will resolve that

Interweb into the switch

NAS into the switch
PC into the switch
Out of the switch into your home plug

:)

Thank you. Looks like that's the best option for me if I want to stick with the NAS I have in mind. My only issue is that I have one telephone port in my house which is no where near the PC or TV, hence why I run homeplugs. Would it still work if I ran one homeplug directly to the router, then two other plugs with one going to PC and one going to gigabit switch? The NAS and Amazon Fire TV would then plug straight into the switch. I'm also thinking that for streaming, the Amazon Fire TV and NAS will benefit from going directly to the switch and the internet will never be faster than the limitations of the homeplugs.

Room 1 - PC connected via homeplug
Room 2 one end - Broadband router connected to homeplug
Room 2 other end - homeplug -----> gigabit switch ------> NAS & Amazon Fire TV

That's my theoretical setup. Right now I dont have the NAS or switch yet but the 3 homeplugs work ok with the fire tv.

This could be very slow, what speed are the homeplugs?

Personally, if possible, id go more like :

The switch, NAS and PC being hard wired together will give better transfer speed from / to your PC ?

Don't forget you can get three port homeplugs! That way just have your router by the telephone socket and plug the three devices in your homeplug on the other side of the house.

I use one of devolo for that purpose in my lounge.

Thank you for the very helpful diagrams. I think I'll go with the second option, because if I understand correctly, I will benefit from the fast speeds to write data to the NAS but won't need the same bandwidth when simply streaming content to the Amazon Fire TV?

Just quoting myself ;) Rather then a switch with HP2 I would just get a multi-port HP where both devices can be connected....

If you get some nice 1200 plugs and have decent wiring then you'll have plenty of bandwidth. Although to be honest, my old 200AV Devolo plugs were sufficient for streaming MP4 encoded 1080p video. The real life experience of installing the 1200 versions this weekend gives me 4x bandwidth. The built in switch is a gigabit one...But I must admit that I haven't actually measured the speed between the devices on the same switch as in my use case they all go back to my office where I've got two 16 port gigabit switches for all my other gear, plug another 8 port for all CCTV equipment which I keep on a separate network segment.

Thank you! I did consider it I'm certain my homeplugs are 200MBs and I've got a switch lying around, so may have to go with the messy 'wires everywhere' option.
