I am hoping that someone can help me out with a bit of advice for a man that needs things explaining in very plain and simple English. I have hardly any understanding of Networks and connections, etc.

I have a small business that I run from home. I have one of these which is the 12 TB version:

I am on BT broadband with a BT wireless router / hub downstairs and my home office upstairs. My PC's connect wirelessly to the internet via the BT router.

What do I need to connect the WD sentinel and set up a network that is accessible externally upstairs in my home office. I know it has an ethernet conection (not sure what that means). Does this go into the BT router? Will I need to get the BT hub and a new phone socket upstairs?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Chris

So you've got two separate networks? How are they both set up?

Hi Neil. I didnt know I had one network. You can see the level I'm functioning at! I have 2 x PC's in my home office upstairs. These are connected to the BT wireless hub downstairs wirelessly. Its a basic home setup. I just have one work PC and one Home PC in the same office upstairs.

The WD sentinel was provided by a company that I am doing some work for. I have no idea what to do with it.

Chris :)

Do you use the same wireless name and password for both pcs or different ones?

If it is for business you probably just want it working so you can get back to making money so I'd suggest employing someone to get it doing what you want.

From looking at your link the device seems to be a server and if you want to see the things saved on it from somewhere out on the internet it will need a connection from it to the router. Cable (Ethernet) is best but could possibly be done with some kind of wireless adaptor. There will be settings to tweak after that so best left to someone that understands what is needed I'd have thought.

Put the server on the next to the ADSL modem router and connect the two with an ethernet cable. There's no need for it to be physically in your office near the computers.

That's the first step. Once the server is powered up, you might be able to see it from your computer, assuming it successfully asks for and gets an IP address from the DHCP server on your router.

Chances are your router will need configuring to allow access to it from outside. The device itself may need configuring as well.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the replies. Sorted it now.....sent it back  Sometimes this is the best solution! I have agreed a different way of working with them.

Chris :)
