Narrowing the choice of lens....

After a lot of info from this thread

I've managed to narrow down what I want in a new lens.
(it was apparent I had no idea before)

Something longer than 200mm, 300mm at least.
However preferably starting at 50-100mm.

£500 MAX!

Which brings me to these...
Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3NON OS.
(But I'd make sure if I was shooting at a distant of 300mm or more it'd be on a tripod).

Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 OS
Great focal range but is it a compromised lens :\ 500mm at f6.3...Would it just be a 'bright day lens'.

Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 OS

Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 Or Canon 70-200mm F4 L

Can anyone advise me further as to which one is 'best' regarding value, IQ, versatility, OS needed or not?

Or is there ANOTHER lens you would recommend more than these 3 within the same budget?

Tamron 70-300 VC, from all that I have seen and read its pretty good and not too pricey at approx 350 quid

Hmm I've given it a look, seems ok. Not many reviews on IQ.
Are these 'not as mainstream' brand ok to go with, when it comes to spending 'larger' amounts of money of quality glass?
 
I would vote for the 70-200, purely because it has that nice wide aperture, which should give you better AF accuracy with the centre point. Couple it with a 1.4 converter and it's pretty close to 300mm. If, however, you need/want the greatest reach possible, then one of the others might be better.

The 50-500 is f/6.3 at the long end, the same as the 150-500, isn't it?
 
You have missed of the Canon 70-200 F4 non IS from your list. This to is in your price range 2nd hand and you can use a TC to extend the range. If you look around you can get the lens and TC within your £500 max budget just.

The sigma 100-300 F4 is also a great lens, I think there was on for sale recently on this forum for less than £400 You can also use a TC with it too.

Both very good points about a 70-200mm. Especially a Canon L lens, highly rated. And as you've said...with a TC..it could be a perfect setup.

IF I can get one at the right price:thinking:

Now I think it's between the 150-500mm Sigma, OS is good feature and it has great reviews on IQ.

And the Canon 70-200mm F4L is not long enough for wildlife, but it seems to be highest rated for IQ and with a x2 TC I'd get 400mm, which should be fine.

Just price now, a 70-200mm ending on ebay in 30mins, 0 bids, £420. Highest priced out of the 4 I'm watching.
 
you should be able to get a canon 70-200 f4 for a far bit less than £420. Look at some of the listings in the sold section of this forum over the last few months.

Also x2 tc reduce the IQ a bit more than the x1.4 plus you lose the AF unless you do the tape trick.

Yeah I've seen them go for less and therefore didn't bid. Have emailed the seller regarding selling privately for less.
I didn't realise you lose AF with a x2 tc. Looks like x1.4 it is :)
 
I think anything over f5.6 you lose the AF, I'm sure other will corect me if i'm wrong.
 
'lose autofocus'? As in.. the speed that it does it. Or its manual :\

Only if you need the 200-400 range IMHO. BTW, the 2.8 lenses tend to be heavier than the F4's
 
The wider aperture is useful if you're shooting in low light or with TC's, but it's bigger and heavier.

I wouldn't imagine the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 takes a 2x TC very well, you'd be better off with the 120-400.
 
Yes, I think I need/would use 400mm (wildlife)

I've only really just considered this lens as I've seen an unsold one on ebay :p
I'll try and get a good deal.
Anyone know of a reasonable price for these? £300ish?
 
STILL undecided about a lens.

Can anyone tell me how beneficial IS is on the canon 70-200mm L is it worth the extra money when its only 200mm ?
