I would love to get a website up and running to showcase my work, (albeit crap work right now :D) but I am having trouble with a name.

Now I really would like to turn this into a career one day, so would like to think along the lines of wwww.*********-photography.com/co.uk. I would like to steer clear of my full name, as it would make for a very long URL ;)

How did everyone else come up with their website names? Are they all named after you? Do I name it after an old house name of mine? A pet? Something that means something to me? I am not asking for suggestions, just a point in the right direction of insparation :)

Thanks all :)

Because SOMEONE on here has already taken it antc ;)

go with your name - it's what you want people to remember isn't it? If you're going to sell from the website then go for a .co.uk - and people know you are in the UK

Not suprisingly I happen to be into landscape photography & live in the UK :)

When you decide on your name I would suggest you buy both the .com & .co.uk versions of your chosen website name

That is worth doing if you're serious about it. :thumbs:

how about www.

-photography.co.uk

:lol::lol::lol:

Personally I'm not a big fan of FirstnameSecondnamePhotography.com - I always think it's perhaps a little unimaginative. In fact, I'd never use the word 'photography' anyway - it's like having 'CV' at the top of your CV. People will know what it is as soon as they visit it. Aside from which, 'different' titles (Chromasia off the top of my head) sound far more intriguing.

Also I'd avoid using a hyphen between the name and the last word.

maybe try .info and .net instead of .co.uk and .com's

or change your name :lol:

Changing your name may be cheaper than buying a popular named website. Thats why I was called XTF324N for a few years when I got my first car!

On a side note to this, who do you guys register your .com/.co.uk/.net etc through? I'm looking to nab my chosen website name but I'm unsure who to do it through.

You need a host company, I use 1and1.co.uk myself.

http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/Home

This page has a serach to see if the name you want is taken and also allows you to order names. I think they are £1.99 at the moment. You can have 10 names all pointing to the same site if you like.

If you use mrsite to build it etc you get the name thrown in, with a years worth of hosting. I found that out after I registered the name :cry:

Just had a look at that, seems quite good!

I bought my domain names at www.123-reg.co.uk and I use a company called 34sp.com to do all my hosting. Both have been excellent in the customer service department, and are very reasonably priced.

I've got no complaints to be honest. Once you get used to their site builder (I'm used to Dreamweaver) it's really easy. I had the site up and online in about 3 hours.

All the galleries are coming back off mine at the weekend and they're being re-loaded.

One thing I would suggest if you do use Mrsite, is to publish the site after you do each page, just to make sure it looks right on the web, as I did have a couple of issues with things not looking right. Looks OK now.

EDIT: for hosting, I use www.godaddy.com. US based, but 99% uptime.

I got my domain from netweaver, just had to pay this years fee £8 for a .info
They also do web forwarding for £5 a year.

Brilliant info, thanks all! Just need that name... ;):D

well if it's not Betty wot is it?
hard to help with so little info!!!!

I made up a word for mine - 5 letters, easy to say and spell. I wanted it to sound a bit Japanese. Anyway, not posting it yet because the site isn't finished. I just thought of words I like the sound of and searched Google until I found one that meant nothing and wasn't taken.

Good idea catonawall :thumbs:

And mmc, I dont fancy using my name, so wasnt going to post it ;)

fairy nuff

Try www.namecheap.com for domain name purchases and registrations. User interface is very easy to use and set up.

Betty - give us some idea of what you like and what actually inspires you... this might help us point you in the right direction. From what I have seen on the site here up to now, I'd suggest;

www.fotoconfidence.com
www.assuredimages.com
www.dashingfoto.com

... just some ideas.

From what you've already given me guys, that sound be enough to be getting on with. I can probably make the website name myself, its just finding the right words :)

Thanks all, you've been great! :D

www.gkdigital.co.uk

G = Glen (Me)

K = Kirstie (The Wife)

digital = digital element of whatever I'm doing.

Was gonna call it glenkirst.co.uk but decided against it.

:D

I used my online alias for mine. Going to change it to the ungeek version though.

short and sweet. I will only use a hyphen if the address doesn't look right without it.

Think I might buy a new one for a photo gallery. But because its me it has to be short, modern and very... colourful? Time to get the dictionary out and look for words which look unique.

Use your name, it's what you want people to remember (however much you dislike it ...)

Take a look down your high street, which shops do you trust and know - the one's that are derived from people's names. OK, there are some notable exceptions, but a huge number of successful UK brands are built on the founders name. Even Tesco comes from the name of the founders wife - Tessa Cowen.

I went with B3 Photography in the end, letter from my surname and 3 as there are 3 in my immediate family!

Though I did like the idea of intials of me and the other half, which would have been JK Photography

Though I like whiskersintheair now! Yer I have two cats!

Cheers
