Expired T-MAX 400, Rodinal (so I'm on a hiding to nothing already), Minolta Dynax 7000i.

I had a nightmare with the film in the changing bag. Forgot to put the scissors in, and instead of aborting early, decided to try to spool it anyway. Film got jammed, ended up taking it off the reel, putting it in the tank, putting the scissors in the bag, took the film out . . . and realised the centre tube had come off its moorings, so the tank hadn't been light-tight.

So, this is what I ended up with. Most of them are similar, although the pattern isn't always this pronounced.

But then some frames seen unaffected . . .

Anyone recognise it? I can rule out the camera - the 4 rolls of colour I took the next day were fine, so it'd definitely something I did. I'd just chalk it up to "light leak in the tank" except for the pattern. Also possible is that the reel rode up on the central tube - I did one roll on its own.

I would say that's probably bubbles in the developer caught between the film while in the tank.

Is it possible that the coils of the film might not have been properly separated inthe dev tank.

David

Umm, I'm gonna go with the film not being completely immersed in developer.
Either there wasn't enough developer to cover the spool, or the spool moved and stuck too high in the tank during agitation :)

the least effected frames may be ones that had areas that required the least amount of developing

Thanks both! I think you're both right. They definitely look like bubbles, and the dev was a bit frothy when I threw it out, and if the spool had ridden up the tube then there wouldn't have been any liquid to wash away the bubbles and would have lead to the stripe of underdevelopment. Explains all the symptoms.

So, need to agitate a bit less forcefully, and get a rubber band for the axle.

Cheers! F&C rocks.

Its quite a shift Keith, 20mm at least, dunno which tank you're using but it might be worth a check to see if its even possible for the spool to move that far.
If not, it could be a quantity error, or a mixture of both. :)

It's a double patterson tank and I only had one spool in . . . dammit, I should have just put the empty spool in on top, shouldn't I? I'm an idiot . . . Oh, well, I know now. :D Thanks again.

We at F&C....accept failure and laugh in the face of Hooleys.....kinda manic like....:wacky:

Yes definately need the extra empty spool - ask me how I know ?

My tanks came with a clip that holds the spiral in place if you didn't fill the tank with them.

I'd say that's swung a fair 5 on the Hooleyometer. Not totally unusable, but still fairly hooley'd. Good effort :D

And yes, I'd agree with the above that it's slipped up the spindle due to the lack of the second spool. Had frames come out exactly like that myself and that was why.

Cutting the leader. I tried spooling it with the leader still on, but it went wrong in a hurry.

Start it outside the bag in the light. When it's all spooled on (in the bag obviously) tear it against the slot. No scissors required in the bag.

Steve.

Steve.

I'd have to retrieve the leader then (auto film rewind on this Minolta.) I guess that might make more sense than what I did, though. Ta.

You need one of these:

if u can find the manual, there might be a setting to not fully rewind the leader

i use scissors to cut the end of the roll

One auto rewind film I read about had a pause of a couple of seconds with the film rewound but the leader still out. If you didn't open the door in those few seconds, it finished the wind.
