Name a few classic TV comedies

rofl at the though of biting humour in 'allo 'allo

A

It might have been some other show; or may be they chose the best parts for the programme ; as I said, I only saw about 10 minutes, may be less; and from recollection, there was some good satire about the germans ( german army?).

Or may be I dont have a very well honed sense of humour...

who knows

It was unmistakably 'allo 'allo. Never watched more than a few minutes of it myself.

Mine's only has to be "The Goodies". Pure silliness, absolutely love the fast paced outdoor parts.

Can anyone remember :suspect:

Dick Emery ?

"Dad, I think I got it wrong again"

Brilliant....

Some mothers do ave'em... Purely for the stupidness of Frank Spencer, and some of the stunts done.

Others, of which many have already had a mention:

Scotch and Wry (Rikki fulton's 'Rev I.M. Jolly was pure class)
Till death do us part
Love thy neighbour (perhaps a bit too non-PC these days)
Bottom (the xmas special cracks me up so much... ''vodka margarine'')
Fast Show & the Harry Enfield sketch shows
Rab C Nesbitt
One foot in the grave
Red Dwarf
Porridge, and Going Straight
Blackadder (III & IV)
Monty Python
Faulty Towers
the Two Ronnies
Morcambe & Wise shows

etc, etc....

Nightingales
Robert Lindsay, David Threlfall, James Ellis, and Ian Sears
weird and surreal

The mention of Robert Lindsay just reminded me.... Citizen Smith.

Anyone know of a website ( a reliable one) which ranks these shows; or gives a short commentary on the quality etc.
Armed with all these suggestions search for them on amazon. They usually have reviews attached that can give you an insight into the type of comedy
that is portrayed

Looked for A Very Peculiar Practice (medical comedy drama) on Amazon. Nearly had a heart attack when I saw the DVD prices.

Complete collection of
Party Political Broadcasts

The reviews for this on amazon are very positive but as you say the price for 7hrs of viewing is high £100 new compared with the complete boxed set of faulty towers £13.88 or even nightingales at less than £7

But they do have reviews

People looking for it have found copies for less than a fiver in charity shops.

Makes you think: it's good to have a DVD release, but that in itself doesn't guarantee that copies will remain commercially available.

Can't believe its only been recommended a couple of times but Father Ted is a great comedy.

cant belive no one has added this yet

Dads army

Don't forget that lots of people who buy box sets from Amazon and post reviews have bought for themselves and are probably fans of the shows they've bought. Makes it a little unlikely that they're going to say the show's a bit c@rp.

Friends is a good'un. Couple more modern sit coms I can think off I really like, but npt for you I guess :)

Aye, maybe, but the language is more understandable to millions more Brits than Rab Nesbitt or Para Handy!:p

Funny you should mention that, I was going to buy a copy of That Sinking Feeling (tag line "eight teenagers, ninety sinks and the crime of the century"),an early Bill Forsyth film set in Glasgow, but it turns out the soundtrack was dubbed over with English accents to make the dvd version more saleable:bang::shrug:

Oh FFS!! :bang: ... especially as "That Sinking Feeling" is exactly the same film as "Gregory's Girl" but way better!

Indeed, which is why I was thinking of an independent website. But I guess, it will be have to be a bit of hit and miss

Humour is subjective. Some may think Monty pythons flying circus is side splitting whilst others sit po faced (like the wife)
How do you get an independent review and where are the independent reviews on the net
Possibly try You Tube and see if a clip is on there of any of the above mentioned programmes and see if you laugh or wince

My Faves Are On The Buses Only Fools And Horses, Steptoe & Son Terry and June Allo Allo.

Holy thread revival Batman!!!
Welcome to TP George :-)

Most I like have been listed already but I'd add - Early Doors. Good to hear Private Schulz getting a mention.
