Hi

Just bought the whole series of 'One foot in the Grave'. I hadn't heard of the series before ( not surprising, I didn't grow up here). Absolutely brilliant

So can you guys please suggest a few classic comedy series from the British television. Real good ones; not the slapstick variety ( I once got Goodness Gracious Me on the suggestion of a colleague; and give it away after watching it for 15 mins).

Porridge. Citizen Smith. Only Fools & Horses. Last of The Summer Wine.

fawlty towers

porridge

blackadder

Red Dwarf - best ever.

Red Dwarf (Best show ever made!)

The Brittas Empire

Porridge

Open All Hours

The Good Life

Fawlty Towers

Only Fools & Horses

I love all of these! Even more than what's on today!

If you can buy only one series, make it Fawlty Towers.

All the above.

Rising Damp

Men Behaving Badly

Just Good Friends. Mainly because it has the lovely Jan Francis, some scenes from a couple of episodes were filmed at South Weald Country Park near me. Even my 12 yr old son watches it and laughs. For some reason season 3 nor the Christmas special were never released onto DVD.

"Auf Wiedersehen, Pet"

Please Sir. The movie based on the TV series is better though.

Thanks Everybody.

I have/seen the following

Fawlty towers : Good laugh
Yes Minister : One of the very best anywhere; suprisingly no one mentioned it
Mind your language : I really love it
Vicar of Dilby : Seen 2 episodes. Liked them. Think might be good
Mr. Beans : Absolute rubbish for most parts. I dont really like that Atkinson chap
Jeeves : Absolutely Fantastic.
Black Adder : i saw only 1 episode. Cant say i liked it a lot. Quite a bit of reference to English history.I nned to see a few more episodes
A Pint of Lager and 2 pack of crisps : Saw a few episodes. Average viewing.

Please keep the suggestions coming. I really love the dark comedy, satire, understated humour more than the slip-bang-slapstick or the oh-so-sweet romantic juvenile comedy stuff

Bottom.

have you considered checking out a lot of these comedies on TV channels like G.O.L.D or Dave? They usually churn them out constantly.

Open All Hours
Porridge
Auf Wiedersehen Pet
Fawlty Towers
Only Fools And Horses

The above 5 are IMO the top 5 comedy series to have graced our TV Screens. One thing I would say though is that Only Fools And Horses should have ended when they made their fortunes, the later episodes were poor, but thats just my opinion. :)

Actually I prefer buying the DVDs Hepburn. That way, I am not tied to the schedule of the TV ( I know the TV recorder thingy is an option; but who remembers to set it on. I need to sell off mine). Plus the warm feeling that I will be able to potter into the TV room and put on a DVD in the middle of the night when Miss Insomnia comes visiting is a great comfort.

Fawlty Towers - there's a reason why lots of people have suggested it.

Blackadder, especially series II and IV.

The young ones.

:agree:Agree with Mark. Plus a very underrated comedy that doesn't get any airtime any more 'Chance in a Million' Very clever.

The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin

The original not the Martin Clunes re-make.

 It was absolutely excellent; it was the dryest comedy series ever but I can never find it repeated anywhere.

it was on a couple of years ago on bbc 3 i think

what about dads army

Only Fools and Horses is pure class. Get some of that in your life !!

City Lights - not sure if that was shown south of the border though
Rab C. Nesbitt
Para Handy

I'd vote for swapping between Dave and Gold - they have non-stop genius British comedies. The pick of the bunch has to be One Foot, Fawlty Towers (Flowery *****?), Only Fools, Vicar of Dibley, Porridge and the only one not yet mentioned - Father Ted (yes, technically Irish but still great).

love thy neighbour, the rag trade, the early series of my family, going straight

Yes, (Prime) Minister - although that may have been a documentary.
Porridge.
Dad's Army. (Although it can get a bit ploddy)
Steptoe & Son.

Has anyone mentioned "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin"?

Think "Mother-in-Law" - you'll know it if you've seen it!

Supplemental:
Oh yes, I now see that someone has, and it's definitely got to be the original.

i agree with these, plus Blackadder, but start at series 2.
Also Brass Eye, The Thick of It (and the film In the Loop).
The Office.
Peep Show.

Personally, I would rather chew my own arm off than ever have to see Only Fools and Horses again, but I guess if you haven't got sick to death of it, it could potentially be amusing.
Fawlty Towers is fantastic.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Anyone know of a website ( a reliable one) which ranks these shows; or gives a short commentary on the quality etc.

Incidentally, i have not heard of most of these shows, far less seen any.

The only 2 ( apart from the ones I listed before) that I saw 1 or 2 episodes of were : The Office and IT crowd.

TBH, didn't like either.

Another one that I saw about 10 minutes on a TV show was about a cafe; and people talking in a foreign accent ( french? german? cant remember). Seemed sort of a sitcom, but nice dialogue with biting humour. No idea what the name was
