I thought about putting this in the Computers, Websites and Other Technology part of the forum, but I'm thinking more Photo Mechanic users will be tuned in to Talk Sports, so here goes.............

Photo Mechanic running on my Dell laptop has been a pain in the a*se of late. When I put a card in the card reader to auto ingest, it stalls with "Not Responding". It hangs for quite a few minutes then decides to ingest the files.

On Saturday, it even did the "Not Responding" thing when I clicked on File in the menu. I have tried a second card reader and alternative cards, but 9 times out of 10, it still goes in to Not Responding mode when I try to do something with it.

I've had a look through the Camerabits forum at threads mentioning Not Responding, but it's a bit inconclusive apart from "update to the latest version" advice

Any ideas of what I could try? It's the latest version

Thanks in advance for your help

Presuming the card reader works 100% normally outside of PM then it sounds like there is a software/driver issue allowing the card reader to stall. There may be two drivers and the card reader defaults to the wrong one. (There is a DELL card reader driver issue with W10 that has been resolved this month with new updates).

I would make sure the card reader drivers are up to date and download and reinstall PM

I can get similar issues and it's been an intermittent problem with the USB ports, rather than PM. Swapping card readers has no effect at all if the USB ports are playing up.
Still trying to get this sorted
Interestingly, I find that going in and out of a Windows Explorer window seems to help as when I go back to PM the drive is then showing in the Ingest dialogue box

Thanks for your replies, guys. I took Jim's advice and delved in to the driver thing.

I'm not technically savvy enough to be able to find out where to look to identify if there are two drivers for the card reader, but I did come across a hardware update from Lexar for handling UDMA7 cards (which I use). I did the update on both card readers and ran a test. PM ingested from both cards without a hitch, so maybe this was the issue??? One swallow doesn't make a summer, so I'll see how it goes

Deffo sounded like a driver problem.

Hi Nigel, maybe something separate but in the ingest box there is an option to unmount source disk after ingest, I had this option unticked for a while that gave me a few hassles when changing the card.
