I have recently uploaded a website and bought a domain name so i was after some opinions on how it is looking so far. I am a complete n00b as far as this kind of thing is concerned and I used Dreamweaver for the first time to do this site.

The font on the main page is currently just stuck on Aerial, which although functional and clean is a little too 'normal'. Can I import specific fonts into Dreamweaver to use or would I essentially have to display anything like that as an image?

Anyway, have a nose and let me know what you think.

people viweing your website can only view it in fonts they have on their machine, so if you use something really fancy and obscure it will default back to arial or similar on most peoples computers.

If you want fancy it has to be images/flash

Hi Steve,

on the internet, its generally accepted there are about 5-8 'Web Safe' fonts. Generally, these are the only ones guaranteed to work on most systems.
You'll find these Font sets as 'styles' in Dreamweaver left hand bottom corner.

Yes, anything else would have to be saved as an image.

Arial/Helvetica
Verdana
Times New Roman
Georgia
Courier

Other than that, the site is great, EXCEPT I would put the menu and title left-aligned, and the gallery doesn't load :(

Good luck, and a great start.

Strange that the gallery doesn't load for you, it has worked on every other machine and browser I have looked at it on  Wonder why that might be??

I may have to look at some way of getting a nicer font as an image too.

It's a constant work in progress :)

I like it. Its very simple but apart from that its concise easy to navigate and give a great feel for who you are and what you do :D

I like the clean look of the fonts, to me it gives a more professional feel.

I'd look at the photo selection bar though, if possible i think having the selected photo bordered in the bar and allowing the arrows to select the next picture. Plus allowing the full picture and selection bar viewed on reduced screen.

Also the full screen and copy icon indicating what they do when the mouse is rolled over.

Only my opinion, very nice

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I am stuck with the gallery thing i'm afraid as it is a free download from Flash Gallery. I considered doing a HTML gallery but this one looks far better than I could manage with my very limited knowledge, something for future alteration I think.

You're using frames. This is terrible. Why? Just look at what happens to the URL when you click a link... nothing! That means your site won't be properly indexed. Remove the frames as a matter of urgency.

Also, remove the xls download file that you have and replace it with a pdf version.

Remove the 'home' link and make the logo clickable. The logo generally aught to take you back to the home page.

Replace the contact page with a contact form.

Hope this helps.

No frames were used in the making of this website :suspect: I think the reason that the URL doesn't change is because the domain name points directly to my own webspace that my ISP provides......as for indexing, I have no idea about that so something new to learn by the sounds of things

Also, remove the xls download file that you have and replace it with a pdf version.

That is do'able I think but I will probably provide both versions so visitors have a choice.

Again, do'able, but personally I quite like the Home link. I could make the logo clickable though, good suggestion.

Replace the contact page with a contact form.

Not sure I can do that at the moment, something to think on. The learning curve steepens! :)

Ah I see, you must be using domain name forwarding. Try and find out if you can get the dns settings for your hosting and setup your domain name properly, rather than having it just forward to your webspace. Your web host should be able to help you with that:)

Thanks, i'll have a look into that.

In a month or so I will be hosting the site on a different server all together, will probably wait until that happens and then look into this DNS thing

Yep, as long as it's on a different server itll be fine.

Buy the hosting and pair it with the domain, to be honest, if you buy hosting from 123reg, you current provider, it will do what you need it to, and be linked properly.

Big thumbs up from me. Can't comment on SEO aspects, but from a user point of view it's one of the better ones I've seen on here... clean, simple, nice images. Just what it should be.

Like it, I would have maybe aligned left with the menu etc but, very nice simple and clean and great pics, works in Google Chrome fine as well.

Nice one

Looks good.

If it were me I would lose the grey boxes with the text on top right, and just use grey text on the black background, and lose the underline. Would look a lot cleaner and simpler.

nice site, thats the exact same falsh gallery ill be using on my site once i get my arse into gear and start it

It was pretty easy to do, even for me with no web building experience. Just got to try and keep it up to date now! :gag:

Thanks for that :)

Good point about the grey boxes, I may well have a change and see how it looks.
