So I went to the Brighton & Hove game last night as a spectator. Took the camera along to see what it could do :cuckoo: Lighting was very awful!!! these shots are all at ISO6400 and around f4.5 - f5.6 - taken on a Sigma DG 120-400mm 4.5 - 5.6 APO HSM - so not the ideal set up! No PP other than resize for web. How do you think it went?? Not looking for C&C on the pics as I know they're not straight etc etc, but more of a review\test on the 7D's capabilities.

Images Removed for my safety :) Dataco licencing!!

Anyone been to Withdean stadium??? God its bad!!! :)

Looks like the camera and lens worked well together, pics look well drfined with no blurr, just a bit confused what a sigma 120-44 DG APO HSM is?

lol 120-400 mm - all fixed in original post

I think they look good for ISO 6400. There's noise there but there doesn't seem to be a great deal of destructive loss of contrast and dynamic range, overall I think they look good.

Are they in camera JPEG's or RAW to JPEG? I ask because I wonder if there's any in camera magic being performed.

I haven't tried a 7D but I have been confused by looking at images on the web as some seem to look great whilst some look frankly awful. I think that generally the higher ISO shots look good but I am worried about some of the lower ISO shots I've seen on line.

As an owner, what do you think of the lower ISO shots?

These were shot in raw, then i simply batch converted\resized in PS elements. Yep there is noise, would fully expect it at ISO6400, but for me its better to get the shot than not at all.

I havent had a problem with noise at low ISO yet, went to a zoo and sat at ISO 400, no noise at all. So far from me, Im very happy!! Will be at grand prix next month so can test out ISO 100 fully :)

They would be fine for a newspaper, but probably not as a piece of artwork to be fawned over in the detailed C&C section of the forum.

You could have taken some piccies of the other team on the ball! ;)

Nice piccies for such difficult lighting though.

Completely agree, if I had a faster lens im sure they photos would be better :) have to agree with what others have posted in the past, to get the best out of the 7D you need top notch glass, but this showed me that the mid range glass is good too!

I did take a few but im biased

My warehouse at work has better lighting! :)

"These were shot in raw..."

Great stuff.

Thanks kipax, Ill loose the images before I get beaten up by mods

Ah, what a world we live in...:nono:

I nearly cried the other night.. I was so happy :)

excellent stuff, guessing the who video issue at pitchside got sorted??

If you had faster glass then you could have knocked the ISO down a few notches which obviously would have improved the situation (perhaps more than you'd think even).

Shame about the football rights fascists :( Oh well, its a fact of life I guess!

Thanks, only had a brief moment showing people, but the response was good. Hopefully it gives people a real world example of the 7D and what it can do.

yes the iso could have come down nicely, and the shutter up some more (was around 1/320 - 1/400 th

Time to find some money to fund some lenses :) he he

Nope still under investigation according to dataco :( But i still have another mkIII and i do a lot of non league and indoor sport so if push comes to shove I still made the right decision.. to be honest i dont think it will be banned.. how could it be policed.... fingers crossed though:)

think every dSLR is going that way, so eventually they would have no togs at any events unless they were on old bodies, cant see that happening really.

I often find/found that Av and centre-weighted average metering give me a slight underexposure...Spot metering works best for me, since I'm metering for the players under floodlights rather than the fans in dark stands...that should push your shutter speed up to perhaps 1/320. In addition, if you got a meter reading from the centre spot then you can set this as your shutter speed, and open up the lens as much as possible, and work on Manual rather than Aperture Priority.

Meaning you could potentially get... 1/640 @f/2.8 and ISO3200.

Which isn't actually that bad. That's pretty standard for floodlit football grounds.

Now you can appreciate how bad we pro togs have it when it comes to floodlights.:gag:

yes found out fully how tough it can be. Shame i was stuck in one place, would have loved the press pass :) one day :)

I just can't see the MIV or the Nikon D3s being banned - how would they enforce if it was as most of the stewards at football matches wouldn't have a clue what you were using.
