Hey everyone.
I recently did a photoshoot with a pro boxer for a magazine called Miami Pro. I am a strobist photographer & favour the Canon speedlights for portability & size when I shoot.

Learn how I did it these images here if you are interested http://chriswoodmanphotography.co.uk/blog

I'd like to know what you think. Please take a few moments to read my blog. Thanks

I do like No1 , but for me the yellow curtain draws my eye and the highlight on the chin is very strong . Overall I think it's an excellent shot .

No.1, and fix the yellow curtain. No.2 looks like he's after a date.

I am not a pro but the red bit sticking out from the top of his head distract me a lot (No1).

Hi Chris, good to see some nice strobist work here. I like the concept of your first shot - you've nailed the overall exposure and Karol helped with good face expression.
But:
- the curtain: I would consider removing it from the photo (cloning?)
- the red bit sticking out of his head: same as above
- when you are shooting under pressure it is always difficult to control all the lighting and set enough of them to make the shot perfect. In this case, I think that you are missing some form of front light to introduce some reflections in his eyes. A popup flash on your camera in manual mode (low power) would probably do the job without affecting the overall exposure.

Still - cracking shot!

The second photo: I think that position of Karol's head and his face expression are "softening" his image... and it doesn't help. Lighting is OK, I would probably change the angle a little bit to shape the shadows differently.

Hope it helps mate!

Like the first a lot. Really like the yellow in the corner.

Lose the top of the corner post and the yellow flare though.

Second - meh. It's fine but nowhere near number 1. The pose and lighting is robbing his chest of muscle. Stick it in B&W and make the contrast curve like a BIG S.

The first image makes him look like a mean boxer. as has been said, the post at the top of his head looks wierd, the yellow flare draws the eye and the highlight on his cheek spoils the image for me.

Overall a very good shot spoilt IMHO by lack of detailed care in PP.

The second image, tbh, make him look a little weedy. The pose has lost all muscle definition and his arms look positively skinny.

Just my opinion of course.

A very interesting response to my 2 images. I will of course take them on board and learn from it. I will edit the areas that you guys have pointed out and re-post to see what you think.

Thankyou for being those vital extra pair of eyes. Really does help!

Hi Again,

I just re-edited my image after taking in the views you had. I removed the flair from the left of the image, the red post behind the head, the light on his chin and the yellow curtain in the background.

How does this look now to you please?

Less distraction = more focused on the boxer, very nice

The transformation between edits is great. The second looks great.

I don't understand what the problem is with the yellow in the corner. Now it's gone, there's nothing to balance the punching bag on the other side.

I swear, sometimes people complain about the tiniest things.

First show is really nice. A quality image that will sit well in any magazine article.

I can't see anything wrong in perfecting your shots.
BUT my advice represents my point of view, how I would execute this idea. He can listed to it or not. I'm sure he would have plenty of constructive feedback on my photos :)

I prefer the original in all honesty, the edit looks pretty dull and lifeless in comparison. Just my personal opinion of course.

I thought they needed a little more punch (excuse the pun!!) So I've just run both versions through one of my own Lightroom presets just to see what they would look like. I hope you don't mind.

Hi Noir dude - This looks great run through lightroom.
Nice presets. It takes on a silky smooth look & the lighting is more defined especially on the back wall where the bag is.

I like it & thanks for taking the time to do this.

I was worried you might have been annoyed with someone messing around with your images. I'm glad you like them.

What did you do? Do you mind sharing your Lightroom presets?

I have a handful of presets that I use specifically at social events. They give me the opportunity to enhance an image to encourage extra sales at an event. My print staff don't have the time to go into Photoshop to enhance images, so a one click option in Lightroom is handy. There are currently a quite a few Event Photographers trying to get their hands on them. They are nothing special, but took me quite a while to get the look I wanted so unfortunately I am keeping them to myself for the time being. Sorry

Hint, (clarity and vibrance feature quite heavily) :D

Chris, thank you, I'm glad you like the blog.

hi
I'm interested in this sort of thing
i'll read your blog with interest.
#1 is a great shot and I like the comments/edit too.

Like the first shot with the re edit, however as someone put it above the second one is like he is looking a date instead of punching someone in the face lol. Either way, nicely lit shot!

Great shot in the first update, but last two edits for me are terrible, the skin is way to smooth, please dont forget the idea was a picture of a boxer and not a vogue make up ad. Sorry if this seems harsh to some, but the only reason I say this is because the first edit is already an excellent image, Please dont get to caught up in photoshop for this sort of image, keep it gritty and i,d love to see it in black and white.
