What do you think are my print prices fair ?

6 x 4 (15cm x 10 cm) Gloss (£1.50 GBP)

7 x 5 (18cm x 12.5cm) Gloss (£3.00 GBP)

10 x 8 (25cm x 20cm) Gloss (£6.99 GBP)

A4 (29.7cm x 21cm) Gloss (£8.00 GBP)

A3 (42cm x 29.7cm) Gloss (£15.00 GBP)

Anyone with any experience in such things ?

Sorry dseered, it's most likely on here somewhere but what are these prints and who are they selling to?

If they are portraits you're shooting (and they're any good ;) ) then that's way too low. If that's to print files I can send you, it's too high.

As said before we could do with a bit more info regarding what they relate to - ie portraits etc and also are you printing them yourself.

Seems a bit on the cheapside to me though.

Bob

edit - just looked at your website and you seem to have a range from weddings to motorbikes. I would have a look at some other websites and get a feel for what people are charging. To cheap will put them off but too pricey and you won't manage anything! Bit of a balancing act.

I agree more info required - first thoughts - way too cheap.

OK, sorry, I am doing a Christening 2moro and I have produced cards with a URL to a private gallery, although the prices have migrated across the site, grrrrr !

Right, I am not a pro but have not charged the couple for turning up and shooting, they are friends of friends, instead I have chosen to take the risk that people will buy from the site, 40 couples and 17 kids so lots of scope to get some great saleable shots, I don't want them to be to cheap, nor do I want them to be high end expensive, I will be using Photobox to print.

High risk - double what you have above!

Seriously, double ?

If you double those you'll be charging about half of what I was when I last did portraits..... and I still think I was charging about half of what I should have done.

So perhaps we should take a step back, detach ourselves and follow awp's good advice. ;)

So then, how does this sound ?

6 x 4 (15cm x 10 cm) Gloss (£1.50 GBP) Should be £3.50

7 x 5 (18cm x 12.5cm) Gloss (£3.00 GBP) Should be £7.00

10 x 8 (25cm x 20cm) Gloss (£6.99 GBP) Should be £14.50

A4 (29.7cm x 21cm) Gloss (£8.00 GBP) Should be £16.00

A3 (42cm x 29.7cm) Gloss (£15.00 GBP) Should be £30.00

Note these will be unmounted, just prints !

yep - that's geting a lot closer - certainly NOT over the top

Good luck! let's know how it goes!

Thank you, this is the card I have produced for the day, obviously I have removed the detail !

It folds in the middle and will be given to all the guests !

I've never sold many wedding prints using this method. You're probably on to a loser so I would go for the higher print prices.

To be fair, I am trying to get my name around more than anything, I know quite a few people there so would rather charge less and make a bit or nothing and get reccos from it, that is what is more important for me !

tell you what to do look at the website for the hotel you were at the other week, then look at the lnks for photographers all in your area and see how they charge.

More for attendance I reckon than per print !

Have you though about offering vouchers for x number of prints say a 10x8 and a few smaller prints for 20% off. That might help drives the sales up a bit.

You have it sussed! There are always people who will do it for less - usually amateurs who can't deliver - I've looked at your web - great stuff - you can do it - so charge them for it.

I charge £6.50 for A4 and £15 for A3 if they want more than 1 print, If its just one its £8 for the A4 and £15 for A3 and thats on Ilford or Canon paper.

Just give them away then - some people just don't value their work or time. PITA.

but are these prints hand printed, or do you send the files off to a photo printers to be printed there???

Wow, thanks for that, batteries all charged, 10 x 2gb Extreme 111's, 70-200 2.8, 17-85 kit + Nifty Fifty 580 ex11, 16 aa's, not going to bother with Tripod or Mono, have a little collapsible reflector that I will take but forget about !
Shirts ironed, suit is hanging, shoes polished, 40d pocket guide in wallet just in case - woooooohooooo, lets do it, as for the prints, what will be will be, after all I got the gig after the baby's mum saw some of my work from a my Godson's birthday party, so if nothing else they will buy some !
Can't wait !

oops, lol- thanx :D. I use foto.com- they're cheap but you have to get the colour just right, otherwise their 'opt.' process screws 'em up like crazy, 6x4" are free for the first 15! and like 6p after that. Been needing to find a good pro. printers in the UK, who doesnt adjust the image with the opt. process.

Sent a few images to Photobox and I was happy with the results, turnaround time and ease of use, to me at this stage that is all I need !

Sorry I re-read my post and it sounded a bit arsey ;)

just remember - you're NOT selling prints - you are selling pictures! You have to cover your time/skill/equipment in shooting and all the admin connected with the printing - you must charge enough to cover all that - whether you are pro or amateur! Most ams just look at the price they are paying for prints and mark that up a little - it takes a LOT more than that!

Sounds about the same as mine (your amended prices that is) - which i know is too cheap, but like you i want my name known.

Remember if you have orders all in at once, thats 1 lot of postage... but more often you get prints in dribs and drabs, so lots of postage.

Be prepared for no pics to be bought at all - Even though everyone including those that could buy telling you they are brilliant. Some folks just take AGES. - I'm trying a 5% off if you buy in the 1st month after.. on over £20 of pics.

Remember to put loads of Copyright or other symbols on the pics you put on the web, some folks will just print off the web, and if you have a symbol in the middle will either live with it, or use scissors (Strange but true).

Good Luck

Allan

Hi

You mentioned earlier you were looking for recommendations - what as? I would drop the 6x4s - thats an amateur size. You are approaching this in a professional manner, you should charge pro prices. If you have the right images people will pay whatever you ask for. You should be looking for £20 for a 10x8. If you give your work away you will regret it. If someone likes your work enough to pay a reasonable rate then you will feel it as all been worth it.

It sure is a tricky one. I personally can't stand seeing extortionate print prices. It always seems like the dirty tactic of "cheap printer - expensive ink cartridges".

You're not buying a print. You are buying an image and you should pay for it..... lots!

If someone wants a 10x8 for £8 or whatever, let them print one of their own photos. If they want yours, charge them for the art, the materials are, in fact, immaterial.

As for getting good orders, forget all about pricing and discounts and any other "after the event" tactics. Do not let people have proofs, do not let people take time. Show them the merchandise and then ruthlessly pursue a large order.

Personally, I can't stand any of that but it's why venture are hugely successful and the bargain shops are going to the wall.

we do weddings. these are our current reprint prices.
6x4 £7
7x5 £10
8x6 £15
10x8 £20
12x10 £25
16x12 £40
16x20 £75 all unmounted. 2 to 2 1/2 times those prices for framed prints.
ok if you are doing event work you,d maybe charge less for the bigger prints, but you dont realy want to be charging a lot less for the smaller ones.
ive had other togs tell us we do em too cheap.
oh, we do VERY well from reprints too.
£200 to £500 isnt unusual from one wedding.
hope this helps.
