A long time in waiting and development, my site to for hosting my photography is now live! I still have a large number of photos to add to it but there is enough there to have a bit of a browse.

You can take a look here: http://johnhobsonphotography.co.uk/

I'm also starting a photo blog so if you like what I'm saying sign up for e-mail alerts or the RSS feed.

Comments and the like the most welcome, fire away!

The site is fine with a clean, simple layout and I like your colour image from Namibia, looking forward to seeing some more.

Nice.

One bit of feedback, I'd feature a photo on the front page to grab people's attention, something nice and big.

I'll have a think about that one. I agree it does look a bit text heavy, which is something that I definitely wanted to avoid, however I do want some prominence to the text and not having a photo dominate. I think a better balance between the two is needed. I may make the photo of the girl with the balloon rather larger and see how that looks.

thanks for the comments everyone.

it looks very no nonsense and straight to the point and very good, but I also think that an attention grabbing photo would be good and or some nice colors and no Im not a girl:) .

did you make all that yourself? very nice. agree with others - a picture on the front page would be great. it may or may not help you but I managed to find a random image header for my site...its wordpress so depending what you used perhaps a similar thing could be quite easy to set up? have a look to see what I mean (click refresh and it'll change)

Is that wordpress you are using?

I did it almost all myself. I started with an existing wordpress theme but then highly modified it to my own exacting requirements, truth be told I'm still not 100% happy with it but it will do for now. I can be a bit of a perfectionist and keep tweaking too much. I decided I'd done plenty enough of that and it was now high time to get some words and pictures up there and launch the site.

And to the other question - yes is it wordpress (as you might have guessed from the first paragraph here!). I was thinking about image rotation so I'll take a look at that plugin, cheers.

Not had a chance to do anything on the site tonight as I've been too busy playing with the ludicrously customisable D200, who'd have thought there were *that* many way to configure a camera?!

It's not a bad site but tbh and I guess a little harsh it's a little bland. It lacks impact and as people have already said above, open the site with a big 800x600 picture that people will stop and go 'ooh' at. At the moment, if I bounced into your site from photoblogs.org site I'd bounce out in seconds as nothing I see in the first scan (and a lot of people do this in surfing !) strikes me as 'maybe i should stop and look at this a bit more. The dividing line between main and the right hand links runs right over the edge of your main text. I guess a css tweak is needed here.

Saying that the snippet of images that you have are great and it would be a shame for them to remain unnoticed as they lie below the surface !

Hi Puz, Thanks for the comments - they're very helpful.

Could you let me know what browser and OS you're using as it looks fine on IE6 and Firefox 2 on my PC. I did rather suspect that line might cause problems on other browsers, it may have to be sacrificed.

Great site and easy to navigate. Yes, maybe a tad bland, I want a homepage that makes me want to look further, which I am not sure would happen if I found the site accidently or via a search engine. Actually, no, I chose the wrong word, bland is wrong, its more.... well stuck in no mans land, neither very simple or very flash, a bit too 'inbetween'
However, that is a personal preference, and I cannot really criticise, its better and much more professional than mine ;)
Works perfectly well in Firefox for me, and IE aswell as a new browser I am running a development version of called Zabidoo.

Hiya, Hope you didn't take offence at the 'bland' comment. But sometimes people appreciate a little bluntness (sometimes not so apologies if so !). There's too much 'ooh nice' sometimes on sites. Been working with websites and horrible marketing types who've given me grief for 11 yrs and the number of seconds people look at sites is very scary. You need to catch them quick !

Some of your kid pictures look very National Geography and maybe one of these on the front page, quite big should make people stop. I certainly would ! Possibly a darker blackground to make the white middle stand out more would work but thats personal preference.

I'm at home and using Vista and I.E 7 and the line looks fine here. At work where I first seen this, it was XP and IE6. not sure what patch though. I'll let you know

wow - those Namibia shots... show me more!!!! :)

I'd love to go there sometime. need to ask father Kerso for a TSE lens ;)

Thanks everyone for the advice - I have taken it on board and had a bit of a redesign of the site, I'd be interested to hear what you think. There is now a rotating photograph on the front page and no next. I have been messing with the stylesheet too to tighten it up here and there. The second blog post is up there too.

I'm just not getting enough free time to edit the volume of photographs that I want to at the moment, but there will be more slowly appearing on the site over the coming weeks, there's a couple of new ones already.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice and let me know what you think of the rejigged site.
