I hope someone reading this can help.

Yesterday I downloaded some photographs I had taken from my Olympus X-42 camera onto the Olympus X-42 software on my computer. As I was looking at the pictures I clicked on another album in that software to look at some photographs I had taken on the same camera last month. But all I got was a box with two arrows and a cross where each photograph used to be. :( I then checked every album of photographs I had taken on my Olympus X-42 camera and found that all photographs - apart from those taken this month - have been replaced by the box with the two arrows and cross.

When I click on each box with the two arrows and cross (in the Olympus X-42 software on my computer) I get a message on screen saying that the link file is missing and that if the file has been moved to another location I should (below the message on screen) click 'refer' and specifiy the new location to relink to the missing file. I did not move them to another location. When I click on the 'refer' button below the message on screen a new message appears on screen saying I should select the original file to relink to the missing file. Below this message is the relink file location on my computer.

I have not deleted any of the album files in the Olympus X-42 software on my computer and hope that someone reading this might be able to tell me how to find the photographs which used to be in those albums so that the boxes with the two arrows and cross in my Olympus X-42 software go and the missing photographs return to the albums there.

As already mentioned, the pictures which were in the Olympus X-42 software are missing except those taken this month. I have not made any changes to my computer but did use system restore on my computer yesterday to see if that might help bring the photographs back. It did not.

If anyone can help me on this I would be very grateful. :)

Thank you.

Get the file name of one of the photos that are still there.

Use this name (with the numbers * out) in your search window, if it finds them, relink as you described.

Reading this I get the impression you are not overly confident with computers so I'll try to keep it simple. apologies if I'm wrong.

First thing once you've sorted this out is to make sure you have a backup copy (and preferably 2 copies) of anything you don't want to lose. Computers can and do go wrong.

Unless another Olympus user comes along I doubt anyone will know the software you are using so we will be guessing.

My guess is that you have accidentally moved the files to another folder. Clicking and dragging a folder in windows explorer (and many other programs) will move it and everything in it. if I'm right it needs moving back so you need to find it.

Open windows explorer (right click the start button and choose explorer is one way) and find computer listed on the left and click on it to select it.
Now type *.jpg in the search box top right and hit enter or click the spy glass icon.

It may take a while but it should find all your pictures. Where it lists folder name in the results tells you where they are hiding. If it doesn't find anything check the recyle bin in case you accidentally deleted them instead.

if you need more help let us know.
