As the title says, one minute I was taking photos, my settings were tv on Iso 1600 on auto focus then all of a sudden it just wouldn't af  I then put it into manual focus and it worked albeit out of focus as I'm not quite that with it to try manual focus. I went into a room and put all the lights on so it was lik daylight and went from several different lengths and all sorts of settings but could I get it to focus....nope

What's happened? I changed the batteries and put a full one in, I turned it off and on again.

The nifty came out of the box tonight, first time I've used it and for a couple of hours it was fine, then stopped working......

maybe try cleaning the contacts on the lens, it gets all of its instructions for AF and aperture from there. If its sat for a while it may have got some dust or (sorry cant think of the right word) corrosion on them.

I only put it on tonight, straight out of the box and used it for about an hour or two without taking it off or anything, one minute it was working, then next minute, literally I moved about 45 degrees to get my mate in her witches hat and it wouldn't take, same lighting, same distance etc

Is it a new lens?

Brand new, arrived on Wednesday, took it out of the box tonight to put it on camera, took it to club, took about 25 photos in an hour or two then it stopped

Aha.....so it's your mate's fault!

She broke the lens! :suspect:

I'll tell her you said that - but joking aside, why's it not working :(:(:(:( Got a mate's 30th tomorrow and want it working

Ah sorry, thought it had just been sat in its box for a few months, didnt realise it was a brand new one ! Does the camera focus ok with a different lens on it ?

I would still say give cleaning the contacts (very carefully) a good clean on camera and lens, is the first thing i usually check when anything like that goes wrong.

Will try it in the morning, bit tired now after having a million kids running circles round me tonight

Thank matey.... bit worried now :(

Probably user error (hopefully)

Could even just be condensation if you've been out in the cold.

Nope - didn't go outside at all with it out of the case from getting out of the car to getting in the club, it sat there in case until I got camera out, lovely warm rugby club, then was taking piccies and literally took picture of one friend then turned 45 degrees, no change in light, distance or anything and it wouldn't take picture

Thanks for that link but reading between the lines, the problems that they have had haven't happened in between shots..........

Definitely will try again tomorrow, I'll have a proper look and clean and play with my other lenses.

Just hope it's okay for tomorrow night :(

Right, just tried my Sigma f2.8 18-55mm and that is focussing and taking pictures in same settings so it's not the camera. Put the 50mm back on and nothing, won't focus or take a picture, press the button, nothing :(:(:(:(:(

Think you posted at same time as me, still not looking good :( Going to bed and hoping that I wake up in the morning and the camera fairies have fixed it.......

Hmmm......don't you think it'll be a bit lumpy under your pillow?!! :D

Hey,

Look at http://www.flickr.com/groups/canon_50mm/

There are a few discussions about faulty lenses. I think one guy put his lens on MF,twisted the focussing collar in as far as it would go then it worked on AF. Also, if you do get it working make sure you keep a lens hood on at all times (esp. when storing the lens) as the front element is easily pushed in and this can damage the focussing motor.

Good luck.

Thank you thank you thank you, cold light of day, less panicky and calmer and gave the ring a little tweak and it's now working again.

Happy bunny again now

Thanks to all of you for helping :D
