My new studio

been away for a few days
came back to find this growing in the garden!

and this is the inside:

I think the roof is sagging a bit so may have a word with the constructor chappie

All your chevrons should be running vertically side to side @ 50cm centers, get a bit of snow on there and I think you'll have big problems.

That crossbeam is taking all the weight, add the dry board and........

Sorry mmcp42 :(

yes, looking a bit dangerous. Otherwise coming on really well

stew

looks to me the guy is cutting corners on this you need more upright on the walls and the roof should have had beams going the short length not the way he has done it. It use to be 16ins centres not sure now a days lots have changed, but more is better then less Also the cross beams would be better sat on top of the wall top beam this one do not like it is and I am not in favour of the hangers you can get not as strong.
When I have made sheds myself I have made a frame for each wall and clad it you can then fix all the wall up after This guy looks like it is relying on each other part to keep it all together.
Are there two upright s in each corner?

its looking good but that crossbeam is not enough you need 4 of them imo.
Rob.

thanks for the feedback
you've all voiced what I've been thinking

sounds like time for
a one-way chat :rules:
no tea and biscuits :bat:
pass me the rubber gloves
etc etc

a small test you might try
If you get hold of a corner [outside] and you move it will it twist?
It should not twist.

tried that - seems to be ok:thumbs: - thanks!

will the outside get painted to tone it down a bit or will it weather to blend in a bit?

will the outside get painted to tone it down a bit or will it weather to blend in a bit?

er that is the treated colour
it's suppsed to weather down to the same colour as the fence :rules:
chap next door has asked for the bit his side to be green
you can see the "natural" colour from the inside shot

I'd have your man re-do that roof! I know it's early days, but it shouldn't be sagging like that...and as somebody else said, any adverse weather and it might buckle under the weight!

Other than that, it's looking good.

You may have already considered this... but... if you're in a fairly confined space you may find light stands get in the way and you'll make better use of the space with things like baby plates / wall mounted boom arms / fastening points for superclamps etc. at strategic points on the walls. If you get to the point where you need to strengthen the roof it may be worth considering this when deciding where to place the supporting beams. HTH. :)

indeed - good call!

Can't add much to what has already been said, definitely the roof needs a fair bit more support, also i would have put at least one window in there, i'm guessing it could get quite warm in the summer, this could be easily blacked out with a pull down black roller blind :)

My Dad has just built me something similar that I designed for my backgarden. It is more of an office for processing my work rather than a studio but one thing I did with the spec was to include for a wooden shingle roof instead of felt. I would consider this as the felt won't last, it'll crack in the sun during the weathering process and then leak, the shingle roof looks great and everyone who has seen the office has commented on the roof. I have attached a picture below.

The picture was taken the day the roof was finished, it looks better now it has got some lights on the outside and we've got a few pots and stuff around it!

I would also agree with everyone else in voicing my concern on the roof structure, it looks very poor to me in terms of strength!

there is some good news (pics to follow)
we have now installed 3 extra cross trusses
the roof is now completely un-sagged and looking really neat
pictures later today!

Here's a pic of the extra trusses
make the whole structure sooooooooo much better (and safer)

and here's my corner - electrickery connected (the dangly white cables are phone and network - yet to be found homes)

IMG_2434.jpg

more sockets to be added once the builder chappie had finished the lining

also had fun with the infinity curve

managed to get some 18mm MDF cut into 60cm squares
next step - cut each into two triangles, then cut out a quadrant - leaving nice supports for the curve - rinse and repeat (16 times!)

there's a wood worker place in town; so explained what I wanted
after lots of head scratching - "be ready Monday" (this was Thursday)
phone call Friday morning "all done" - excellent

went to wood yard - there's a neat little bundle of the cut-out quadrants ready to be collected
but but but - that's the bits I don't want!!! :gag:
"oh" quoth he - be right back
5 minutes later the lad who'd done the work comes out with an even better looking bundle - the bits did want!

just need the lining finished then I can start building - to infinity and beyond (sorry :coat: )

Looking Good! Keep the updates coming!
I'm enjoying reading about this project....oh and that's a beast of a shed. I only wish my tiny wee garden was big enough!!

well after "input" from SWMBO the studio is now in camo colours:

and here it is in all its glory - before I start dressing it:

IMG_2441.jpg

builder has finally gone - hurrah!
(note the small pile of "builder's droppings" !!)

since the picture I have:
- painted the basecoat on the back wall
- primed the ceiling (white) ready for painting (black)

more pictures tomorrow but the arms just can't lift the camera today!!!

Its looking great!... so when can I schedule you in for building mine..... :P

awww - I will have to get back to you then in say... 5-10 years :D

and today's photo-update:

IMG_2444.jpg

the far wall has only had 1 coat of "base" so will need a coat of "proper" emulsion

the side wall 1st section and 3 sections of ceiling have had one coat of matt black
they are very very black!

you can just make out the two beams that are now black
the one at top of frame is black facing the target wall and white facing the door

the rough edges are masking tape ( 'onest guv)

you can't see the section nearest the door, but it has a white ceiling
the unpainted walls will be grey (hopefully tomorrow)

oh and the builders droppings will go once I put the electrix back on the walls!

that black is certainly very black! Looking forward to seeing it with all the painting done.

I am jealous. Very Jealous. Horrendously Jealous. Horribly Jealous. JEALOUS!

for goodness sake get off the fence and tell us what you're thinking!

(must say it's starting to look like it might actually happen at long last!)

me too - the paint just won't dry quickly enough for me!

Thats looking really nice. Have you thought about using wall booms for the lights? They will save you loads of valuable floor space.

oh yes - they're on the secret shopping list!!!!

Is there any ventilation?

At the minute the black makes the white at the end like a football goal

Cant wait to see it finished!

does doesn't it - hadnt noticed that!
I can't wait to see it finished either!!

Great updates.

on the registering thing - If you are thinking of using it for business use, AND are thinking of hiring it out, then you need to pay business rates on it.

Good luck with it.

Allan

Hadn't thought of hiring it out - until you mentioned it
hmm
what's the going rate do you suppose??

today's update

electrics finally finished :gag:

7 double sockets
1 flourescent light
1 fire alarm

all plumbed in and working

everywhere has now had one coat of paint
looking quite good, if I say so myself :)

matt black may be a good choice from a lighting point of view
but it's a b****r to work with
you only have to touch it and it leaves a mark
still black, but looks patchy
plan is to give it another coat when all the grunt work is finished
then just touch in the white where the black went too far
then just touch in the black where the white went too far
then....

next job is the infinity wall
I've put the templates in place and they all seem to fit
can't wait to get started on the curve tomorrow

no pics again tonight
by the end of the day I can hardly lift the camera
let alone hold it steady!!
