Hmmmm! food for thought but your statement implies that what you describe is a global system of stock co-mingling and widespread activity within Amazon & eBay centres ~ really?
As that is akin to money laundering i.e. putting dirty goods/money in with legitimate goods to 'make it them disappear into the system'
As for your friend, sadly his actions in not pre-planning by checking his equipment thoroughly and for a wedding photographer to not carry backup gear is very far from ideal and a recipe for disappointed customers. In litigious USA also a risky activity to be so unprepared............?
PS I am surmising that when you say ".....to do a wedding shoot......" he was supplying a paid wedding photographer service to the Bride & Groom.
