Well yesterday I was given something I never really new existed, my Grandad's SLR from the early 80's. I didn't really know he was into photography (in the early 90's he took a stroke and was unable to comunicate/walk untill his passing in 2004, I was 7 when he took the stroke)

He was well into it, he did his own developing in a small room he had in the house, had all the gear, most of it has since gone. My mother came accross his camera the other day and thought I might be interested. I am well chuffed with it, its my 27th today so has made the day much more exciting and special! I feel as though part of him is still here now which makes me very happy and to know we really did have something in common after all.

Anyway enough of that here are the details and a picture :D

Its a Canon AV-1, with a Miranda 28 - 70mm zoom/macro. It also has a Miranda Speedlight, Miranda Skylight Filter and came with a pretty substantial tri-pod. Amazingly this camera won't have been used since the early 90's and the battery still has power in it!

I haven't got any film yet but will deffinatly be ordering some today. I have found abit out about the camera but can't find much on the lens though, anyone have/know anything about it or the company? Think I'm going to get a Canon FD 50m 1.8 as there is one for sale locally just now.

Thanks for reading

Matthew

Miranda was Dixons' own brand, they're rebranded lenses which could have been made by any number of third party manufacturers. Some of the primes are quite good, some even also being sold under a Zeiss brand! Can't tell you anything about the one you have specifically though.

EDIT: I suspect it's a Cosina

That really is lovely.

I think I'd be tempted to use it with the existing lens or maybe just add a wide aperture 50mm.

In the olden days :D many people only had one lens and I think it's nice to keep the lens count down :D

PS. Happy birthday!

Nice present! Have fun with it and drop by the film section with some of your efforts - we don't bite :)

A nice 50mm 1.8 would go very well on it and make an excellent "bring it anywhere" body.

Beautiful looking camera in great condition.

Make sure you download the latest firmware update for it before you use it. :bonk:

Thanks, well chuffed still can't stop looking at it! Also had to think for a minute 'that's a good ide.... doh!' haha

That's a lovely bit of kit. I hope you take great pleasure out of using it.

Nice camera (I have one) exposure readings are spot on compared to expensive cameras and I have taken quite a few shots with it...........but it's too basic for me and is more of a P&S camera.
