Yes
Right, I've just bought a mac - don't bother telling me there are too expensive or any of that nonesense, just be happy for me :-D

Apple Mac Pro
2 x Quad Core 2.8Ghz (Overclocked to 3.1Ghz)
12Gb Ram (Suck on that lightroom!)
1.2TB Harddisk (Finally space for lightroom backups!)
Nvidia 8800GT (Photoshop CS4 gpu offloading! woo)

Done!

Why? There over hyped and to expensive for what you get...

Only joking.Im happy for you...and a bit jealous. Woops my 80gb 2gb of RAM macbook lol

I have bought the Ram and HDD from third parties and saved ~600 on what mac would have charged.

The mac came to ~£1600 and the Ram (+10Gb) came to ~£230 I also bought two 24" Dell flat panels and some nice MA-15D speakers (ok, I don't need them for photography but you gotta have a bit of music)

This was bought with gift money :-D

Thanks again Tony!

would have cut back on the ram and got a better graphics card myself

omg wow! how much was that? (sorry for being nosey but i want a mac but idk how much to spend)

That's one serious spec of a 'puter he's got up there and I'd imagine it was 'very many money' indeedy. But you'll get a fantastic MAC for £1,400.00 and if you can stump up the dosh, I think you should get one over a PC any day of the week.

There are lots of reasons why MACs are worth the dosh and the after sales is just one of those reasons.

I mainly got it for the integration and workflow advantages of the mac. (And they are super shiney)

I've got a lot of ram in there because lightroom is evil and because I'm going to be running at least 2 OS's at any one time using parallels.

Of the graphics cards on offer the 8800gt was the best for the kind of work I'm doing. With that said, if I need something faster in the future I don't think it will be an issue to pick one up...

Wow, that is one horny beast youve got there.
I'm incredibly jealous!

Dont forget to post pics :D

:agree:

Love to see what you get for that kind of dosh, hope it makes you a cuppa as well:nuts:

come on!!!!!

please tell us how much

I bought a imac. 24" LCD screen with a few other options and 500GB memory. Ordered it direct from Apple. Cost me just under 2k but worth every penny. I had far too many virus issues with windows so since having Apple i have never looked back.

I best upgrade my Sinclair ZX Spectrum  seems to me this Maccy thing looks a bit faster....................

Sooooooo jealous :(

come on!!!!!

please tell us how much

The details are in post #4 but all in all I've spent about £2350 on computer gear this week :bonk:

(This money was very kindly gifted to me to spend on mac stuff for photography)

I'm very lucky and very spoilt and I can't wait for it to arrive!

Why bother overclocking? By all accounts it doesn't speed things up perceivably other than your time runs faster than it should.

Depends what your doing, your quite right about the time issue though - silly macs!

The time being out is nothing to do with it being a Mac, it's the way the system is overclocked. Years ago ( many years ago ) I used to overclock everything with HW mods etc, and there were real benefits. Now it's less than 9% increases to something already damn quick, through a software hack that just increases heat build up, I just don't see the point.

Each to their own though :)

gift money? lucky sod! so, when wales' power grid suffers a massive draw during the day we'll know its you turning on and churning images through LR and PS then!

Hmmm, Mac's still use the system bus "tick" for system timing (even windows stopped this quite a while ago) When you increase the cpu cycle speed the bus steps up and time gets skewed. This doesn't and hasn't happened on windows machines for quite a while.

From ZDNET:
The improvement in performance is quite remarkable. For example, the cheapest Mac Pro in the current series with a 2.80 GHz processor runs significantly faster after overclocking than the most expensive at 3.20 GHz. This is because in addition to the CPU frequency, the main memory clock speed is also increased, which results in an additional increase in speed. The price difference between these two machines is 1430 Euros.

As with all hacks - I'll have a play and decide for myself whether to OC or keep it stock.

As promised guys (a little late - sorry)

Here is my first unboxing photo:

n.b The mac flys!

That looks like a Mac that can make a cup of tea too! Bonus!
