Wow what a difference.
I bought a new sekonicl308S and tried it out today for the first time and boy its great.

Going to set my lights up properly next week and get some portraits done of the wife and our daughter.

Had the lights for a couple of years but never used them due to not knowing how.
Went on a studio course so will put all I learned into the pics next week.

Just one question, the model we had working with us on the course had a full makeover from a make up artist, would it be beneficial for my daughter to wear a bit of make up to stop the lights shining her skin, she does not wear it normally so just some advice, oh she is 13 by the way.
 
This is what I just been told by HoppyUK.....to help with hot spots"Careful dab of matt make-up is standard practice, even for blokes when necessary"
 
Thanks guys, i thought I was along the right lines, we will put a little on her just to dull the shine.

Yep, matt makeup. Just bear in mind that the purpose of makeup for photography is pretty much opposite of the purpose of 'normal' makeup...

In photography, we use matt makeup to take away the shine, as well as to cover up skin blemishes. Of course, we also makeup eyes, lips etc to draw attention - but still using a non-reflective surface. Your daughter (maybe when she's a bit older) will use shiny makeup to get herself looked at, and mostly they use very highly reflective makeup that is guaranteed to ruin any photos.

Just make sure that your wife understands that shiny makeup would be worse for your daughter than none at all.

Incidentally (personal view here) I disagree with heavy makeup being used on a lighting course. It makes life much easier for the tutor, but really he should be showing you how to use light to overcome the problems, he shouldn't be avoiding the problems in the first place.

I will let the wife know about non shiny makeup no matter how glam the daughter wants to look.

The course I was on was a very basic course more about positioning of lights and how to gain certain effect more than anything else but I do see where you mean as we all could have came away bought some lights and away we go without knowing all the pit falls, but then again IF he showed us everything he would do himself out of business as a portrait photographer :D .
 
Well I set my lights up tried to remember what I got told on my course and away I went and took tsome test shots tonight.

I am pleased with the results so far, maybe a bit more messing with the settings and I will be happy.
 
don't forget hair straighteners - saves ages in post - lol
