Hey,
I've not been on here in ages, (moved back to Scotland and lost my photography passion :( and was demotivated, but its coming back looking on here)

My 17-85mm canon lens (got it with my 30D about 8 years ago) decided the other day that it would start hunting, followed by the err01 code. What a brilliant surprise on xmas!!!

Is it worth repairing it? (anyone know the cost?)
or do i replace it?
if so, what is better:
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM (Wex: £ 349)

or

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens (Wex: £589)

is the canon worth the extra?
if canon is worth the extra, anyone know where is cheaper to buy it? (simply electronics seems to say £399)

if anyone owns one of the other if you could put up sample images just so there is comparison?

Thanks
Adam

I think the common fault with the 17-85 appears to be the ribbon onside - don't think it's really worth having it repaired - you could buy a 2nd hand one, but it's a good excuse to upgrade.

I've not used either of the 2 lenses you suggest, but the 15-85IS gets a good following on here and has good reviews.

Alternatives what about the Canon 17-55IS - constant F2.8, but you loose a little length, Canon 24-105IS - constant F4, but not as wide...

Hope it's of some help

Can't vouch for the 17-55mm but I've mainly heard good reviews, the 15-85mm is a great lens, the newer/better/more expensive version of the 17-85mm basically. Couldn't ask for much more from a walkabout lens.

Indeed, it's a great lens if you don't mind losing the option for wider shots... 15/17 vs 24mm is quite a difference on a crop body.

Definitely, the only time I think the 24-105 makes sense for a crop user is if they already have another wide angle as well. To lose the 28-40 equivalent range without having another lens to cover the range would make general use quite difficult.

From searching the web and reading other posts I think the 15 to 85 would be a good replacement for it.

Looking through my old post have motivated me a lot!

If you were happy with the 17-85 I'm sure you'll be absolutely ecstatic with the 15-85, it's quite a jump in IQ.

Indeed, even 'pixel peeping' at shots from my 7D with the 15-85mm shots look good even at 100% crop.

Glad to hear that as it would be the main lens on my 7d

Used 24-105mm f/4L is a great lens for around £380-£460

add a cheap Tokina 12-24 from classifieds and it is a very nice combo. I can't believe how how cheap these 24-105mm are now

Watch for this to be re listed on the bay or send him a message. Gotta be worth spending £40

yeah i think i'll replace it then send it to get repaired and sell it on repaired instead of faulty!

will pop into calumet and try out the 15-85 then!
I loved the 17mm on the old one so 15 should be even nicer!
