So I decided today I was going to make a case, so that I can keep my most used items and most valuable items safe and together and I stumbled across a metal briefcase in maplins filled with foam!! U shape it to your needs and here is the end result fits my 5d mkiii 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 100 2.8 macro, 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and a set of extension tubes. I love the end result!! It's probably been done a million times before I just never seen it and thought I would share with you guys.

These cases were all the rage about 35 years ago (I had a black one) but are murder to carry and very impractical to use.

I picked up a similar case from them a few years ago. It makes a useful safe and dust-free place to store the lenses/old 20D that I'm not currently using. (although since acquiring a new camera bag, my spare lenses are more often left in the old camera bag)

Only really useful for transporting and storing equipment. Using it every day as a camera bag will drive you insane.
 
Had one years ago with my K1000 and lenses in. Only practical use was home storage, oh and standing on to get a shot over the top of crowds. Very painful and bulky to carry around!
 
That takes me back.....

A bit like a Peli in that it is good secure storage to stop stuff rubbing against each other, getting wet and great for standing on, but can prove to be awkward and heavy after a long day.

Nevertheless congrats on creating a dust free, logically compartmented, storage for your stuff.....until you buy a new lens or two.

I think bags are good on the day, but are also overrated for taking everything out that you don't need.

Tailor the kit to the job and don't break your back. Its no fun otherwise.

Long time ago I made my own equivalent from rigid plastic tool cases and foam bought from an upholsterer. Fine for transporting kit in a vehicle to prevent damage if there was such a risk. I would never store kit in it for more than a day or so due to lack of ventilation. Foam (except for closed cell foam) will hold moisture for a long time.
