my kit is not the best, so my pictures are rubbish!!

Well I haven't read all the thread, but I think I get the gist. The temptation to upgrade camera and lenses is always going to be there IMHO. But, you are takin great pics Robbo with the gear you have. Upgrading may give you less limitations than your current gear, but you are producing great images with what you have.

It is important to upgrade when you can, as your photography improves you will want less limitations to experiment more, but I feel with so many on here listing their gear, you can feel sometimes a little lower-down-the-ladder.

I have a 5D2, a recent upgrade, but now I dream of a 1Ds Mk.4 or perhaps of a complete change-over to a NikinD3s:lol: It can be never-ending!

I am of course completely happy with my camera. Upgrade when and if you can, but remember the 450D you have and the lenses you have right now , and with your eye and experience with your kit, you are producing some great shots, and appear to be enjoying it.......And that is the most important thing.

:agree: keep it up you're doing great

I've still got my 400D and im very happy with it.. :)
I would have loved to have been able to take pictures like yours within just 6 months..

I think what you really have is a touch of gear envy - which I can totally sympathise with as my kit consists of:

Nikon D60
18-55 Kit lens
55-200 lens
Cheapo raynox close up lenses
SB600 flash

Now I can get some good shots with the above but there is no denying that my days out to the zoo would be more profitable with a better lens - even a Nikon AF-S 70-300 VR would make a difference. I get really frustrated trying to work within the limitations of my kit and frankly yes - I can be a bit jealous when I see other togs walking around with very expensive and capable kit that I just cannot afford.

BUT - going back a year I was using my panasonic FZ8 bridge camera and still managed to produce some shots I was happy with. I have never felt looked down on by other TP members because of my kit - but I would LOVE to be able to afford more high end stuff because as Raymond Lin said it would widen my window of opportunity considerably. Whether or not I have the skill to make best use of whatever "window" I've got is the important thing though.

And I thought the OP was being ironic - fantastic phots that I'd be proud to put my name to.

The amount of money you could spend on a new body and lens could be used to take you and your family on holiday to somewhere that is interesting to photograph.

I'm all for getting the best technically sound picture you can manage but some of the most memorable photographs from history weren't taken with L lenses and strobist lightshows.

There's a lot of joking and self-deprecation in this thread, but there is a serious point to be made. I had a look at your shots on Flickr and I think they are all pretty good. they show some creativity, they have good composition, and technically (even considering your limited gear) they are very good.

You are, like myself, a hobby photographer. I probably spend more than you do on gear (5D, 50D, expensive lenses etc) but that doesn't necessarily make my shots any better (see website below), it just makes the technical image quality better. I have seen shots taken with a 350D and cheap lens that would make you weep with frustration. If you were a professional then you would certainly need expensive high-end gear, because you wouldn't get away with anything else.

Ask yourself this question... if you wanted a really good shot of your family, and it was the only shot that you were ever allowed to have, would you want it from ...

a) An amateur with a 5DMk2 using a 24-105L lens?
b) A top photographer using a 450D and kit lens?

Point taken?

you make a good point :-)

nice pics on your site to btw

.

Yep, and then you'd want a Hasselblad, and then, and then.... $$$$$$ :gag:
