Ok, please stick with me for this. I have basic knowledge of editing photos and have been using LR for a while to edit my RAW files. Recently upgraded to LR4. Also have PS but only really use it for resize and a final sharpen, and of course cloning etc should the image need it. I can do the basics and make a 'pleasing' image, but I don't know how to edit so they really pop. Now I have recently been playing with actions available online, some amazing, some rubbish. The thing with the amazing one is, they are compiled of many layers doing incremental things to achieve the final result. Now, I don't just want to buy actions and click to get close to my final image, I would love to make my own, but my word, how do you possibly learn how to get to the end result with all the incremental layers? There are so many different blending modes, filters, adjustments that can be made? I am lost in a sea of editing!

Practice, experimentation and more practice. Why not join in the two editing threads in this section, one serious where people put the steps taken to achieve the end result (not that anyone is likely to be able to follow it but it does give a good idea) and the other for fun where if you ask you will get some information as to how a particular edit was achieved.

It is quite easy to create actions, start by making simple ones and then do more complicated ones as your skills increase

I enjoy experimenting in photoshop and often end up with over 100 layers which is okay if I have remembered to identify them and group them but a pain if I have not and notice an error somewhere and have to find it :D

theres a thread about a free photoshop webcast from PT4U running in their section

Thanks for the responses. I will definitely check out those threads when back on the computer, and also that free Webinar thingy. I really need to learn some PP.

Its just like building blocks...you just have to learn what each one does then you can put them together, garage or cathedral...its all the same bricks

just try and learn the foundations as best you can :)

Thanks, I'm sure your right. I had a look at a site that someone mentioned in another thread called Paint The Moon. There are some amazing PS actions on there, but I don't want what seems to be the easy option and pay for someone else's. it's just the many layers with different blending modes and settings and groups and wot not are quite intimidating for me, as I've already mentioned, learning what does what. Yikes!
