Just been presented with my Grandfather's camera, unfortunately it isn't in perfect condition and I doubt it works, but it's a very nice thing to have. It's an Agfa Karat 6.3 Art Deco made in 1936. Found out a bit about it from here. If it doesn't work do you think it could be repaired, would love to be able to take a photo or two with it although I've never shot film before.

Year of release: 1936
Film Format: 35mm 12 exp in Rapid cassette
Shutter: Agfa Automat B 25 50 100 (self cocking)
Lens: Igestar 6.3/50 (three elements)
Aperture: 6.3 to 22
Viewfinder: optical direct vision viewfinder

It probably works.
The difficulty will be if you do not have both casettes.
It feeds casette to casette.
They can be found on ebay.
You would need to load one of them in the dark from a modern casette of film. You cut the end square and just feed it in in total darkness but only about 12 exposures worth plus a few inches of leader either end. The Drive cog in the feed pushes it from one to the other, but you need to insert the start yourself.

Yes I've read about the cassettes and as I don't have them need to look into finding replacements. Am quite keen to get this working, on closer inspection the shutter release is missing so it might need a bit more to get it going again.

It's brilliant, I never met my Grandfather as he died when my mother was very young. This is a bit of family history. Now to look through all the old family photos to see if we can work out if any of them were taken with this camera.
 
It's fantastic when these old bits of family history are brought back to life, go for it I say.

This was my Grandad's old camera, a Leica IIIg. Unfortunately he swapped it for a couple of Pentax as he wanted a spare as he was doing a lot of wedding photography at the time and this was before I was born (or shortly after). I've been keeping an eye out for it ever since (you can read the serial number) but its never re-appeared......yet.

When you look through the family pics, remember the format is square rather than landscape like 35mm.

No. Technically it does not use 35mm film as we know it, you just got lucky that that size fits into the cassettes. In this camera you get 24mm x 24mm as opposed to 24mm x 36mm with the 35mm format.
