Hi all,

I don’t quite know where to post this...

Basically, my school unfortunately does not offer photography as a GCSE, therefore i am doing it by myself and I am only going to have the occasional input from the graphics teacher who will point me in the right direction

i have been told to research a few photographers and I was just wondering if anybody could suggest a few which would be interesting to research.

Also, if their photos could be easy(ish) for a 15 year old to recreate that would be great.

Thanks very much

Wonderful :)

My son had exactly this to do a couple of months ago in order to get onto the A level photography course.

He chose a couple of french wildlife photographers who shoot for National Geographic.

The Nikon Professional magazine would be ideal for you as it catalogues load of famous photographers. Unfortunately I need mine for my son but I am sure there will be someone on here who has finished with them and would let you have a few.....

If you PM Camazaki, my son, you could probably have a bit of a chat about it.

Jonny,

don't let age get in the way, tis just a number, you can do anything!

i had a project to do before i started my photography course, i had to research and recreate photos from a man called "Edward Weston", you should check him out, he has 1500 photographs to look through online :D

Steve

Oh and Johny, do you have any extra books for your camera?

I did this very course just a year ago. I had to study a portrait photographer and a photographer of a second topic of my choice (I did Theatre). I studied David Bailey and Pascal Molliere.
If you have any questions or want to see my coursework as an example then just drop me a line :)

Johny,

I have a copy of The D40x "an extended guide" left over from the D40x we had for my son before I gave him my D200. If you haven't got it then I will let you have it. Just PM me your address.

Jonny I did mine last year also, so you know what assignments you have been given? If its anythign like mine your will have to review the work of certain photogrphers depending on what assignment you are doing, I quite enjoyed it and I am doing my BTEC now.

A few I reviewed work on for my GCSE:

Dorothea Lange (portrait work / photo jornalisim) Probably enjoyed learning about her the most.
David Bailey (portrait work)
Henri Cartier-Bresson (legend)
Wilson A. Bentley (first guy to photography the snowflake) Amazing mine for his time.

There are other ones but I am in work atm and just cant think of them, I should still have the list my tutor gave me I will look it out tonight. Fair play to you for taking it up on your own, if you know your camera you should be fine only thing I would be sure about as you dont have a dedecated teacher/tutor is for each assignment make sure you understand what you need to include.

If you need any help feel free to PM me, I got an A :rules: go me, so hopefully should be of some help. I still have alot of the hand outs (somewhere) that was for the course.

This cropped up a wee while ago.. Master Photographers originally broadcast on the BBC in 1983.

If you can get a copy of the DVD Genius of Photography then this is a series well worth a watch.

Taschen have some very reasonably priced photography books covering iconic images and a limited number of well known photographers.

wow, thanks for the replies

cowasaki: i have one book and i have actually just ordered that one off the internet, but thanks very much for the offer

and i am just starting to look at all the photographers you have all mentioned :p

towershot: i was thinking exactly the same thing... i am surprised so many people have replied

thanks everyone :)

Thats a real shame, it was sat here ready to go !

Good luck with the course and keep us up to date with what you are doing, we all like to help.

I did the GCSE myself last year at night school; I'm a mature student! I chose Brandt and Karsch as my photographers to research. Both are known for their portraits but Brandt is also known for his London Blitz and nude photography.
I chose portraits and architecture as my projects along with 'red' as my exam project. Must have done something right as I got an A*. I didn't see the benefit of the AS so am taking the slow route to a degree with the OCA.

Yellowduke: thanks very much for mentioning Brandt, his photos are amazing, i am going to use him alongside Ansel Adams

Jonny,

:agree: I started around that age and it was difficult especially as there was no option for GCSE but when it comes to A level you'll be streets ahead of the other students and will feel so much better about what your doing!

Best of luck :)

Jonny - what's your interest? It's ok saying research a few photographers but we could narrow it down to photographers in the field you'd like to work with and that would make it much more interesting.

I was looking up wildlife photographers yesterday for my son and came across this site: http://www.nhpa.co.uk/default.html There are galleries from leading wildlife and nature photographers

I take alot of note from Jared Polin, Chase Jarvis and Dom Bower.
All very good togs and fun to watch. Look them up on YouTube.

I genuinely am very, very modest, but I think I may be testament to that.

*touch wood*

think you can get away with that one scott ;)

OP, the only advice I can give is to go out and shoot. SO much. You're obviously dedicated or wouldn't be teaching yourself a gcse lol...

Whatever you like, but just be out shooting - though don't get stuck in a rut. And enjoy it. Mess about. If you can find some dedicated and interested friends in the field, that helps too, if only to bounce ideas around off of, help at shoots etc.

As well as whatever you love to shoot, shoot people. It is very easy to not shoot people, trees, landscapes or birds don't get lost on the way to a location or be late and don't need makeup - and most importantly, don't care what the photos of them look like. People do, so you have some pressure to take awesome photos - I don't know about you, but I thrive under that pressure, it is what makes me love what I do so much (and why if you look at my port, there is just one photo without a person in it lol). Even if you don't thrive under pressure - it will at least teach you to cope - a commercial job is not the time to be unsure what settings to use, or which memory card you used, or how to position a group so you can see everyone.

Oh, and I re-read this every few months. Inspirational and affirming text from one of the best working editorial photographers alive today.
