Yes
Although I'm no pro, I thought it would be a good idea to set up a website to use as an online record of my images with a (very slim) chance of perhaps making a couple of quid selling the odd print.

I'm pretty happy with the results considering it's pretty basic and didn't cost much to have it done. I've managed to sell a few framed prints and have a couple of people interested in some more which is great.

I don't ever expect to make a living out of photography but if I can fund the odd bit of kit now and again then it's a bonus. :)

C&C welcome.

Thanks for looking
Gareth

yes i like it !
did you do all your self (website)?

No I paid £200 all in. The guy came up with a few designs and I chose the one I liked best. All I had to to was upload the images and add any text. Easy as that, although there was a bit of to-ing anf fro-ing to tweak things.

Very nice website mate. Looks very well done and your pics are stunning. I am sure you will do well with that site. Well done

I don't understand, what have you paid the £200 for? The design is a free design available for Wordpress, called Pixel (as it says in the footer)... You're talking maybe a couple of hours work, at the most for a reasonably competent person to put that together.

Here's the theme, available from Wordpress itself.

Also, the menus link to a website called foo-solutions, rather than internally, I assume that's not intentional?

:cuckoo:

I'd challenge anyone to take a project like this from enquiry to invoice in a couple of hours
all told it's the best part of a days work for a competent developer and that seems to be roughly what he's paid for

Yea, it is definitely worth the £200 mate. Nice website.

For what?

Install Wordpress - one click installer.
Install premade theme - 10 mins via FTP
Install any pre-made plugins? - 20 mins, maybe?

IF there was any custom coding involved, I fully appreciate that there would be more than 2 hours work involved, but, IF it's just a case of installing Wordpress and pre-made stuff, then it could quite easily only take two hours.

The OP stated that he uploaded all the images and text, so it's not masses of work.

At the end of the day, if the OP is happy, then thats all that really matters.

As the OP said, he is not into website design or setting up so the price paid was worth it for him.

Look how much an electrician or plumber or mechanic would charge, even for smaill jobs!!

Looks a good site to me - seems to load very quickly and is easy to navigate, looks professional. Good work. Hope you sell some prints. And £200 quid sounds reasonable to me. Setting up a website is easy if you know what you are doing and a complete pain if you don't.

How easy would it be to make that website with that theme? Interested as amate want to build a website for his building firm but hasn't a clue where to start! Any info out there on how to build using Wordpress?

I agree, which is why I said

Wordpress installation;

http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

Most hosts offer a one click install now though (you literally follow their instructions, which are quite simple),

Installing themes;

http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes

Again, reasonably simple to do. It's when you get into the nitty gritty of changing themes, moving stuff around within the theme and generally changing the code. If you're happy with what you get by default on the theme, then it's mostly like using Microsoft Word or similar to write pages/posts and stuff :)

If you are happy paying £200, then fair enough, it is worth it.

But all Matt is saying, is that what the guy has done is free to get anyway.

I have just installed WordPress, and installed the Pixel theme within 5 minutes. 2 more minutes to active the Nextgen gallery.

Still, it looks nice, and if you are happy, then that is all that matters.

I used to use Frontpage years ago as i don't know HTML. Is Wordpress like that? If not, any programs like Frontpage?

Wordpress is based on PHP, and is web based, rather than computer based.

When I get five, I'll set up a testing domain and put a post up so people can have a play around with the backend of WP, without having to install anything (obviously, some features will be restricted for security)

Looks a good professional website and some excellent images.Hope all goes well for you..

I love it!

It looks very professional, the way you described it in your initial post I thought it was going to be awful! It's great!

One of my clients is a graphic designer who has offered to do me a website (on a different topic) for £250, I thought I'd got a good mates rate deal - but you have outdone it with your find, well done - VERY cheap and definately worth the money.

It's all very well people saying it's easy for anyone to do a website but what about the complexities such as search optimisation etc? Always worth paying an expert a few quid I think.

Well, I just installed WordPress, having never tried it before, and it took me less than two minutes.

Search optimisation? Not sure what you mean but that's fairly irrelevant to installing and running a website. If you're talking about search engine optimisation like on Google, then that's something completely different and wouldn't be included in this. Nor is it relevant to a hobby site like the OP's.

£200 is a bit steep but I suppose if you're happy with it...

I think a lot of people are missing the point.
I (and a lot of others) have no idea what a "nextgen gallery" is etc etc. This is my point. It's all very well saying it's easy to do. I design expansion joint systems and find that easy. Designing a 2 or 3 pin hinged system on a steam main is a piece of p*ss but I get paid to provide that service as most people wouldn't know where to start. I am being paid for my knowledge, not the actual drawing on a piece of paper showing what to do. I have paid the designer for his knowledge.
I'm happy with the end product.

I don't think people were suggesting you did it yourself, rather if it's reasonable for a pro to charge £200 for a 5 minute job.

Doesn't matter - your site is ace, be happy with it

I think your site is cool looking well laid out and easy to get around, your images are real nice and I hope you get lots of work/sales through your site. I find web site building easy and agree with you you did get a good deal and you are paying for the skills that you need. My first post here (A Moment) was a painting I did with a airbrush, was less than three hours work painting and was sold for £350.00 and what they got was what they wanted through my skill.

Website aside, since I looked at it to see your photographs.... and I have to say how much I enjoyed looking through them. Your macro ones are simply amazing!

Fair play to you mate, at least you are happy & the site looks great.

I love doggys face (there's a real race on) in the sleigh picture in the "people" section.

My friend on the sledge had some perfume or deodourant on which my sisters dog just went wild for. Wherever she went, the dog followed ready for a bit of humping action!! That's what his face is all about! :D:D

Thanks everyone for the positive remarks. I was nervous adding a website full of my images to a photography website and fully expected to get ripped to bits, so it's nice that maybe I'm on the right tracks. I've not had my camera a year yet and already feel I'm improving - mostly thanks to everyone on here and advice and C&C I've had.:thumbs:

There is a white lined square at the bottom left of all the galleries, what is it?

It becomes active at the last page of the gallery, but I don't see what use it is.

Code is <span class="topTags"></span>.

Other than that anomaly, it's a very good looking site. You might want to add a disable right click feature to save your pictures from copyright burglars. Not 100% effective, but it will deter some.

Barry - I'm not sure. I've never noticed this TBH. I'll get in touch with my website guy and ask him to remove it. Cheers for the spot.

I love to have a website but my pics are rubbish LOL:thumbsdown:
