Its the marching band in the middle.

well done DS and Congrats nothing like the feeling of your first published

Well done mate  i just had my first pics published so i know how good it feels.

Proper job, well done:woot:

Thanks very much everyone!!!

I mailed the paper with a link to my flickr folder with my shots from the carnival in, and asked if they would like to use any of them. The only payment was my name underneath it lol.

Very pleased none the less

*sigh*

You should have been paid, you should have insisted on payment. There are too many people giving away stuff for free and it's destroying the industry.

It's always better to not not be published than to damage the industry by giving it away for free.

Lol bonfire piddler...

Sorry if I let the team down, think they would have told me to poke it if I asked for cash. It was the editor who I emailed, and she was also the photographer for the paper. Its a tiny wee local free paper.

All trades suffer with people doing it for free, DIY in your own home keeps work from painters, plumbers, electricians etc.

no-one does DIY for an ego boost! It is NOT the same thing. Amateurs giving pictures away are having a devastating effect on professional photographers but they value a cheap ego boost over anything else. How sad is that? :(

These threads always go the same way - and no matter how often the pros here tell you what you are doing - you go on doing it for a pathetic little ego boost. Yes - it's great to get your work published - I had 40 pics published this week and it still gives me a thrill - but I also know that I will be paid for my efforts and that makes it possible to carry on doing it, eat - pay the mortgage - and buy equipment that most on here only dream about.

You have to question what your picture is really worth if you get paid zilch for it - while the publisher makes a nice profit. Ask yourself why the writer gets paid, the editor gets paid, the printer gets paid and the am photographer gets a pat on the back. They are taking you for a ride because they know you are so vain you don't care - sorry but that is SAD!

So I offered a few pictures to my local community paper, of a small community event, a community of which I am a member of and enjoy being so and you go off on one like that? Whos the sad one here? Not me, I am doing quite nicley thank you and have all the nice toys I want. What would be the point in me buying "equipment that most on here only dream about" when I have been taking pictures since... Ooooo August last year.

Grow up little ****

No problem - I know where to come to get IT work done for free.
Just stop and think a little. You may be a small part of the problem but it's a huge problem.

The agressive and what could be descired as extremely arrogant attitude about it doesnt exactly help teach people.

instead of posting about it informing people the reasons why in a polite manner you want to insult them?

Attitude is killing the industry on all fronts, not just those offering a few pics for free.

Well done D.S. its good to get your pics seen, and for someone else to think they are worthy to be seen. Don't forget to use this to your advantage and perhaps phone the editor next time, make your self known etc. You never know where these things will lead.

(or you could go in demanding payment....... And she'll tell you to get stuffed! LOL)

only if she can get free pics elsewhere - if every photographer said no then they would have to start paying.

However writing in these threads is like banging your head off a wall.

Read the bloody OP. IT IS A FREE PAPER! they are not going to pay him.

Stop flaming the poor lad and congratulate him on a big milestone in his photography :)

We all hae to start somewhere mate so well done  As you move up to big and better punblications then you start getting paid. BUt for a free paper it doesnt matter. Well done, have beer and feel god damn proud!

If your own work is good enough, Andrew, you have absolutely nothing to fear from amateurs - same goes for every trade or profession.

To the op....well done, even if it was free the paper still wouldn't have used it if it was crap ;)

sadly that isn't true - even the Guardian has started to use freelance pictures as often as they see fit - anywhere they see fit - after only the initial payment - in spite of on going talks with the NUJ. Reason - they are bombarded with free pics from amateurs - it effects everyone working as a photographer when amateurs give their work away for free.

Every marketplace moves on, it just means that you have to move with it...

Well I'm OK...most amateurs don't venture out to Afghanistan and the 'lads' have been banned from using cameras and video-cameras - not that it stops them...just look at FB...
But - quality will always win through in the end...if you're really good, you will always find a market for your work...

Yes the market is deluged - but much of it is dross and the PicEds know the difference. If it's a choice between a bad photo and no photo, they'll run any old thing from a cell-phone, but if they have a Pro-standard image as well...they'll run that.

well that's mostly true but a lot of weeklies use free pics rather than pay a freelancer to shoot them.

OK so free papers with NO budget use anything they can to fill the space between all the dead-dog news - big deal...
Aim a little higher, then start complaining when you get scooped by a Nokia...

no - not just free papers but weeklies that used to apay £30 PER PIC ARE NOW GETTING THEM FREE FROM AMS.
