I am buying a Canon 550D and thinking of perhaps starting out with the kits lenses and then add a better lens a bit later after we feel comfortable with the camera.

In your opinion, which of these Kits lenses would be better; given the price difference is nominal.

The '18-55mm IS + 55-250mm IS Twin Kit' or the '18-135 IS Lens Kit'

FYI, the other options that I was considering were;

Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Asp
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

Thanks

Sorry to mix it up, but I would get the Tamron probably :) Or stretch to the Canon 17-55/2.8 IS (I know it's a big stretch but very worth it). Usually f/2.8 for the win ;)

It's a close call between the 2 kits though, I'd probably get the 18-135 IS to have a one-does-it-all lens even after you get a better standard zoom and tele. It all depends on your budget and what you're photographing.

I think that there is a big difference between 135mm and 250mm, especially if you are thinking of trying your hand at wildlife shots. The focal length 18-135 would be a nice walkabout and I''ve heard good stuff about the lens.

What do you think you will use the 55-250 for?

I have a tamron 17-50 F2.8, and for the price it is amazing!

The only thing need to be considered is the tamron 17-50 F2.8 use a conventional focus motor other than a silent and fast USM/HSM motor. So sometimes it is a little bit noisy.

Sigma has a newly announced 17-50 F2.8 HSM OS to replace the old 18-50 F2.8. But it is more expensive than the tamron's 17-50 F2.8.

Canon's 17-55 F2.8 is good but the price...

My friend has a sigma 17-70 (old version) and I think it is also nice!

So maybe tamron's 17-50 is a good choice for the first lens. And a lot of people will recommend the non-VC version other than the VC version. So do I.

Hope this helps:)

This post highlights what should be your biggest issue. If you're into sports, action or wildlife photography, go for the kit with the 55-250 lens. If your main interests are likely to be portrait or landscape photography then go for one of the other options.

Thanks for the input guys.

I should have clarified that the camera will predominantly used to capture shots of our impending little arrivals (yes - twins!), nice holiday pictures and general use. There won't really be any wildlife / sports photography.

As such, from what I'm reading, I'm now thinking of buying;

1) Canon 550D
2) Canon 18-135 IS Lens (as a good all round lens)
3) Canon 50mm f1.8 II

I can buy all of these in under £1000 which was my max budget and should give me enough for what we need it for, especially as newbie to DSLR's.

I'm sure when we feel ready, we can upgrade later on.

If I'm missing anything, then please let me know!

Thanks
