OK, well here we go. Taken with a Nikon f301 and Tamron 28mm f2.5 at Conway today and scanned with an all in one jobbie. They do seem to have lost a bit in the scanning and the first one was taken before I remembered to set the ISO to DX, but the 2nd and 3rd are ok.

The camera and lens cost about £35 so I'm fairly happy at my first attempt but more work is needed.
Must remember not to look at the back of the camera after every shot :bonk:

Cheers

Andy

Great first efforts Andy, the second one is my favourite, great lines and texture in the stones

Not bad for £35 eh!

Well the sharpness looks Ok, but on my monitor there is a pink cast.

Thanks folks. I think I'm going to pair the camera up with one of my better lenses and see if I can improve the images.
Excalibur, I can't see a pink cast but I am colour blind so I don't notice these things.

Cheers

Andy

I still love the anticipation film gives me. They're really contrasty on my monitor, not a criticism just an observation. What film was it, did you process at home and what did you use to scan them?

Yup, pink and conrasty here too, nice piccies though, loving the stony steps

Love the texture in the second one - you can almost feel the grittyness of the stone.

I'm cool with the contrasty nature - the bloke who taught me how to print in the darkroom always used to say to me "It's called Black and White, not Grey and Light Grey you know". I'm not so sure about the pink cast though - it's really not a sin to convert to greyscale after scanning etc. - especially if it's a scan of minilab processed prints taken from C-41 Black and White film.

Thanks RS. The film was Ilford XP2 and I took them to Asda as I couldn't wait to see what they would be like and they were scanned with a Canon Pixma 510.

Thanks Arthur, I really enjoyed the process and although I'm a little dissappointed with the results I will try again. I think the lens was a bit of a let down, its a Tamron Adaptall and could be sharper, going to try one of my better lenses next time.

Cheers Big Yin, I think you're right a conversion is needed after the processing.

Thanks again

Tell you what Andy - get a roll of proper BnW, shoot it, and pop it in the post to me - I'll dev. and scan it and send you the results

(And before i'm innundated with requests - this is a one-time offer, because i'm feeling generous!)

Nice offer BY - that looks a pretty sharp lens to me, both my adaptall lenses are spot on, never seen a bad one... and a 2.5 28mm is always going to be dead picky on critical focus anyway.

Hey great images Andy! Quite exciting running your 1st roll isn't it!

Your images look great and the detain in the last 2 shots is very good. I can just see a pink hue so maybe best to turn down the saturation when you PP just to make sure theres no colour cast even though you can't see it.

Good fun this film lark innit! :D

Thanks mate, very generous offer. One question though what do you mean by 'proper b&w'?

Went out again today with my Nikon 18-135mm (which is v. sharp). Forgot that its not meant for full frame and that it has no aperture ring, but I'm pleased with the results. I'll post some pics this evening.

Thanks Andy, it is exciting and fun and I suspect that it will make me a better photographer, eventually. I can't see me going over to film full time but I will certainly be doing a lot more.

Now, a final question, has anyone any suggestions as to a good, manual focus, medium zoom lens. I have a Tokina 70-210mm (untested as yet) but could do with a walkabout lens?

Thanks

Andy

Proper BnW film - Illford FP4+/HP5/Delta 100/Kodak Tmax 400 for example - rather than those black and white C41 films such as XP2/Neopan 400CN/Kodak 400BW CN that the high street processors will do for you.
:)

Thanks mate, I'll get me some rolls and then I'll be in touch.
