Oh my my. Have I travelled back in time when degrees were distinguished between, and truly valued. Arthur, you run the risk of being burnt as a heretic for expressing such snobbish and elitist view :D

Yeah - not many of us BSc(hons) left to burn:D

'twas 3 years, I already had the hnd... B.Sc (hons) Computer Science, was a Desmond :( Was damned near a Richard after the bloody Japanese finals!

what on earth is desmond and richard and geoff( D = lowest pass grade and R = repeat or fail, G = good or the highest grade? )

And whats HND?

Sorry if I am taking you back to the painful memories of the days filled with hash induced haze and rock and roll without the 'three lettered word' ( at least for me)

Geoff Hurst = first, Desmond = two, two, Richard III, third... and so on. 'Cos you can get a first, a second, a two one, a two two, a third and a getouttahere

HND is a Higher National Diploma.

Was never hazy, I was 26 at college for the HND and 32 starting Uni - I tell you Uni is wasted on them kids today

Ah, rhyming slang. A wonderful, but very overlooked beauty of the english language.

Right, so whats 2/1, 2/2 etc. Is that a Grade ( i.e First, second, 2/1,2/2,3 and fail)

Degree classification

A degree may be awarded with or without honours, with the class of an honours degree based on the average mark of the assessed work a candidate has completed. Below is a list of the possible classifications with common abbreviations. Honours degrees are in bold:

* First Class Honours (First or 1st or 1:1)
* Second Class Honours, Upper Division (2:1)
* Second Class Honours, Lower Division (2:2)
* Third Class Honours (Third or 3rd)
* Ordinary degree (Pass)

If students fail the course entirely, no degree is awarded.

A form of rhyming slang has developed from degree classes, usually using names of famous people. Due to the conventions of rhyming slang, only the person's first name is used, the last name referencing the degree by rhyming with it.

* A First is known as a "Geoff" or a "Damien" after Geoff Hurst or Damien Hirst.
* A 2:1 is known as a "Trevor" after Trevor Nunn, or an "Attila" after Attila the Hun.
* A 2:2 is known as a "Desmond" or a "Dezza" after Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
* A Third is known as a "Douglas" or a "Thora" after Douglas Hurd or Thora Hird; it is also sometimes called a "Gentleman's Degree". Getting a third in each year of your degree is referred to as a 'Vorderman' after the British television celebrity Carol Vorderman who managed this unusual feat when studying Engineering at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.
* Those who fail to pass the degree altogether are sometimes said to have obtained a "Dan Quayle".

Let's just say - i've only ever been asked what class of Honours Degree I achieved once - when I was applying for a job with a University. Pretty much everyone else used to just accept the letters :)
