Hello everyone, Just got my first ever camera (550d) and yesterday I filmed and edited my first ever video. I know its not the best, but I learn't so much and most important of all had lots of fun with both filming and editing.

Please take a look at the link below, and let me know what you think :

Honda S2000 promo

This was filmed with just the stock 18-55mm lens and edited in FCP7 and colour graded in magic bullet.

Thanks everyone.

Ben

... first camera and first video ever? good job!.. actually brilliant job!.. looking forward to seeing more..

Hi Sammy, Cheers for the reply, and thank you for your kind comments.

I also notice that your only just down the road from me :)

Thanks

Ben

Great job.

Personally I'd have liked some of the panning shots to have been slower (the speed of the one at 0.37 is spot on, the one at 0.46 is way too quick) and I think it would have been a little more exciting if some of the moving action had been cut into the stationary stuff. Little bit more mixed up, rather than block of one then block of the other.

I'm no expert, but its just my two penneth.

Thank you for the friendly feedback, I love this site already. Yes I know what you mean, I really did learn a lot when I started to edit and one of the first things I realised is that my pans were all too fast, I did slow a lot of them down in FCP. I also wish I had got more driving footage, but I only had an 8gb card and it filled up when filming the driving scenes. I ordered a class 10 16gb this morning.
I also feel the film would of been much better if i had a dolly slider, so that's next on my wish list. If anyone has any advice on cheap sliders please let me know.

But yes, thank you again, hopefully my next one will be better and I will take all advice on board. Thank you.

Hi Slimboy Fat, great find there! Have you tried building anything from the channel? If so, how did you get on?

Ben

Well, I've got some "headshot" videos to do with a white background so I've bought some of the halogen worklights and they seem to do the job pretty well so far.

Hi Ben

As already said above some of the panning shots are a bit too quick for my liking, but the moving shots of the car going round the corner slowed down work really well the music works good with the pace of the video, maybe have a look at the video setting you have as some of the shots for me are lacking a bit of detail for a first go well done ! Like you I have just started using my 550D for video & love it keep it up

 There's a few people from near by area's perhaps if someone arranges a TP Meet, we should go! I haven't been on one yet but they seem to have a good day togging..

Good first attempt but I am not a fan of the colour grade and some of the exposure seems a little ott to me.

Hi Harvey, Thanks for the comments, was it the particular colour grade i used you did not like, or colour grading all together?

I know what you mean on the exposure, its more so on the driving scenes isn't it? I'm still trying to work out what does what and what effects what haha

Thanks anyway, I got some more planned so will try to improve :)

Hi 56BD, Yeah that's one of the main things i learnt that day was to pan slower next time, i didn't realise until I got home and started to edit the footage. So I will hopefully improve that next time.

Thank you for your comments though, and I am glad to here you are enjoying your 550d as much as I am .

Thanks,

Ben

I think it was the colour grading all together, it just seemed, too Top Gear to me. It's an effect I've seen on there a lot and it can work, but I think it depends on the scenery and car.

Yeah exposure on driving scenes was off, car still footage was fine. I don't do car photography that often, might be worth asking in the auto section and see what they do for stills and move it over to film. Maybe a polarising filter would help?!

Looking forward to seeing more and makes me envious my D700 doesn't do video.

Hi Harvey, I am glad you said that really as what I had in mind when i planned my first video was top gear style video, which is why I chose that particular colour grade, so maybe it did have the desired effect, which may be just down to preference I guess?

Yes, I didnt know much about filters yet, well nothing actually, I dot even know what they do to be honest, I will start my research this weekend :)

You'll definitely be able to see more soon, and thanks again for your help :)

If that was what you were going for then you achieved it, which is more important that anyone's personal opinion :)

Tbh, I only know a bit from reading the forums and a little research. I don't currently own any myself and never used any either. Hoping to get my hands on some soon.

I am pretty certain there is a good guide in the tutorials section here :)

There seems to be exposure problems, some frames just "white out" and others "black out".
This could possibly be due to not relating to where the sun is and positioning of the vehicle. Also there to me looks like there is too much attention being paid to the bringing into focus ,too much makes it look amateurish

also be aware of colour, not just the subject but what is around and behind it
Video shooting is a completely different ball game to stills photography and its only by practice you can see the errors, heavens knows I have made enough of them.

Still as a first attempt not bad and maybe taking some shots of the car further away may help as in "the middle distance" and pay attention to brightness would be my advice.

Have a go at moving around the car as well as just panning and see what you can achieve

Hope this is of some help

PS here I have to say I am not in favour of duel use cameras, which is why I bought a Panasic digital camcorder and I believe is the way to go

Hi there,
Just taken a look at the video and for a first attempt your definetly on the right track! Been said before about the panning speed and I reckon you have taken that on board by now.

No doubt you are building up loads of ideas in your head for the next vid. Good luck and look forward to seeing what happens next.

Thank you again everyone for your words of wisdom, I will take everything on board in my next video.

I have got some more planned, but I am waiting until I get my 50mm 1.8 lens, as I think that will add a lot to the videos too from what I have been reading.

Thanks again
