I think you will get a wide range of opinions, but most people would also recommend that you pay a visit to your local camera shop and see what suits you handling wise. Welcome by the way

Thanks bud

I am a nikon onwer, D40 is great for its value.

but if you are finding yourself on a tight budget for the future camera/lens (especially lens) i think you should go canon, as there are a great deal more second hand quality lens for sale than there is for nikon.

functionality wise you need to do a bit of research and find out what u need especially wiht regard to what you want to shoot

Cant fault that advice. Love my Canon!

I too should hopefully be able to get my first DSLR soon and have opted for a Canon after asking around however the 'general' advice I got is that as general cameras around that budget they all tend to function the same and very well

Enjoy! :D

D40 is not a bad choice for a first DSLR, simple to use, light etc. Whatever you choose I would keep it as easy to use as possible for your first serious try at DSLR photography.

for general shooting D40 with the 18-200 VR should be sweet
