Well ive built a photo rig for cars ;) Rig of doom.

Well it was mk2 really. I tried a telescopic pole first but it ended up as bent as dale winton. Bit of searching in the garage and i found some alloy scaffolding tubes. Seem spot on. The suction cups held on for about half hour in quite a bit of wind.
 
I'd be seriously careful with that, you could kill someone with that sticking out while you drive along.
 
I use those sucker cups in work to lift windscreens, and lets say i've lost a few.lol

It would if you had someone decent handy with a camera in the first place. It's for slow moving shots (pushing mainly) to produce photos like this

I would hate to see what those suction cups are going to do to any paintwork!!

I just can't see they would not cause any damage... they are forced onto the paintwork, so anything underneath them is going to marr the paint....

Horses for courses I guess!!
 
I don't think that is going to go well. Looks a bit too heavy. That's going to eventually dent something.
 
The image above is excellent.........but yours would have a bl**dy great big poll stuck to your roof!!!
 
and from memory, don't scaffold poles weigh an absolue ton???? (not literally of course)

I've used Manfroto suctions mounts on my car before, it does leave a bit of rubber on the paint, nothing a good clean doesn't take care of though, certainly no permanent damage :)
 
outlore...yes i agree they will pp out a small area where the mount and boom can be seen, but this will need half the image cloning out!!!

Bird doo is worse than any suction cup especially if the bird is a seagull:lol::lol::lol:

Hope you have your own private race track because if you take this contraption on a public road, you deserve all the points you get (on your licence :rules:) that is!

lol... most of the pics you've seen in car mags etc will have been taken with something like this, although probably not home built....

a speed of 2-5mph is enough to get shots that look a lot faster, in fact a lot of the time, the vehicle is actually pushed rather than driven, so there's little chance of causing any issues...

Yeah right! So if you achieve 5mph (pushing), you would need a very slow shutter speed (several seconds) to achieve the desired blurred background and wheel movement, yes? So how would you stop camera shake, with a camera bouncing around on the end of a long pole then?

Same principle as panning, where you move the entire camera quite fast but still get a sharp shot, subject wise. Plus the camera shake is minimal on a car being pushed, its called suspension ;)

That is the reason why you push the car at such low speeds, the car will move very smoothly.

As Dal says, you only need move the car VERY slow, nobody is suggesting you actually drive along with a rig attached LOL.
As for paint damage, as long as the cup is clean, and the paintwork itself then no damage will result.
One thing to note with suction cups however is that you should only run the rig for 6-10 minutes before resetting the suction as it tends to leak out over time and after an hour they can let go. So if you are fiddling about taking multiple shots, just remember to reset the suction now and again.
An aluminium pole would be the ideal choice however. You are running the risk of deforming the roof panel just with the weight of the rig otherwise.
 
If you fire that thing when moving, the bill will have you by the short hairs
