my daughter wants a camera!Help!

my 14 year old daughter has asked me if i could get her a camera. She lives with her mother and so doesn't see me with my kit or anything and i dont think she is wanting to get into the bottom end of DSLR, but more like a decent compact as she says she just wants ''to get arty''. I have no idea about compacts and was hoping someone could confirm through experience wether Samsung's ES17, Fuji AV100 or a Nikon Coolpix L22 are good enough. I'm limited to these three choices (dont ask!). Would be very grateful for any replies, dont want her to start off with a naff camera but i cant afford to give her one of my older Canons (and no i am not a terrible dad!!...just skint) Thanks for your time.;)
 
i would get a superzoom/bridge camera instead, these are a bit like SLR's and if she really loves photography after then she is technically familiar with the layout of one.

a second hand fuji s9600 is very good, also consider the panasonic fz28/38 and sony h20.

im sure theres a few more especially from fuji as they are probably the kings of superzooms.

check ebay for some, most will be around the £150 mark which is the same a new decent compact camera but obviously the superzoom will be better due to lens, bigger sensor etc.

Don't no anything about those models you mention.

Perhaps finding some reviews might help your choice?

oh yeah just noticed the mentioning of limitation, silly me:D

i think out of those three it would be the nikon because it is the best camera make out of those three and it will offer great image quality. have a look on dpreview and see if theres any reviews on the compacts mentioned.

Nikon compacts aren't usually that great compared to the Fujis in my experience.

I know it was a wild gamble but i was hoping somebody out there had actually used/got one of the three...reviews are helpful guidance but i always prefer to hear direct from the horses mouth!! Thanks again though guys, and i'll take in what you said about the Nikon/Fuji compacts Scott.
 
Again cant comment on the three specifics, but my Daughter has just bought ( or, I bought it!) a Nikon Coolpix S220 from Tesco for £79. She loves it, also for arty stuff ( she is taking her art A level soon) and it seems a pretty decent camera, despite no one on Amazon giving it a good review! They are obviously incompetant as my Daughter has great results from it.
If the L22 is similar, i would go for that.

Thanks very much Allan, i'll check out the specs difference. Kids eh? i feel like telling her that i did a paper round for 2 1/2 years just to be able to buy my first Zenith EM !! What a tank that was!
 
I've got the L11 (older lower spec model) and am pleased with the results, the lens is sharp, and the exposure is accurate.

Bridge cameras do not have bigger sensors. They are a compact camera with a larger, slightly more sophisticated lens on the front, and manual control - that's it.

All available in pink perhaps? ;)

The Fuji is the only one to be able to capture decent video, if that makes a difference. And they all take AA batteries, which is either a godsend or a major weakness depending on your preferences.

Thanks Weiran and like the joke!! It will probably also help getting Fuji cos its a ''proper photography name'' which probably comes next to the choice in colour for her!! Kids. :help:
 
Our daughter requested a red Nikon L19 for Christmas! Really pleased with it and it also takes AA batteries - which makes life easier! ~~Pictures are great and its a really solid build also.
We've had Fuji's in the past so would also recommend them.

Not quite true. My first proper ish camera was a Nikon Coolpix 8800 bridge camera sensor 8.8mm x 6.6mm(0.58 cm²), the Nikon compacts are around 6.16 x 4.62.( 0.28 cm²) Doesn't seem a great difference but percentage wise it's enough.
 
Regards sensor size, generally, the larger the zoom, the smaller the sensor. The Olympus SP570 springs to mind, that had a tiny 1 2/3 inch sensor, so that it could incorporate such a large zoom. Whereas the Panasonic FZ50 had a larger 1 1/8 sensor as it dod not have as large a zoom. Though this changing with the release of Fujis HS10, I believe.
 
I have the Coolpix L6 if that's of any use. I don't know how closely they can be compared, but it's a great wee camera, has some nice features to allow for different modes/shutter speeds/effects. I have some photos all about the place from that camera, but the only one I can think of online is this one:



Anyway, hope that somewhat helps!
 
Thanks to everyone who has took the time .....after all that she wants the SamsungES17 cos she likes the pink :bang:. i give up, but i will post some of the pics when she has done some just to let everbody have a look at its photo range. Cheers again everyone.
