:woot:

Arrived today. Somewhat smaller than I remember when I played with one a few months back, but still feels nicer in the hand than the E-420.

Whilst some people may regard the move from an Olympus E-420 to the Nikon D40 as a sideways, or possibly even backwards step, for me it's a leg up into the Nikon system. As good as Oly are, the glass is pricey, it's harder to find bits for (and usually much more expensive), and the sensor is tiny. By moving to the D40 I've lost 4mp, but gained a bigger sensor, a trade off that I'm happy with. I've just ordered a grip for it (fleabay) and it'll be going in studio next Sunday. Having had a play I'm chuffed so far! And only 90 minute charging time too, which is pleasant.

Congrats on the new arrival - did you consider the D40X at before you plumped for the D40? Was just wondering as you mentioned dropping 4MP in the change.

Yeah I did, but for the cost I don't think I'm going to miss the 4mp. The D40 is a step up onto Nikon. It'll do me for a bit but ultimately I'm looking to save and eventually go for a semipro/pro body.

Honestly, I don't really see the need for a grip. Just my opinion. I find the battery life of the d40 to be incredible, especially in comparison to my friends d70 and d200. Unless your buying the grip to bulk up the feel of it a bit.

there's no difference is there? apart from MP?? Never really looked at a D40

I'm already thrilled, though the interface is going to take some getting used to. On my E420 it was a little simpler to change shutter speed and Fstop, on the D40 you have to turn the display on first  Still not read the book so I'm sure I'll probably find I can do that.

Just waiting now for delivery of a grip and 2 spare batteries. Can't wait to get in studio with it all!

But one of my SD cards keeps locking itself as I slide it in. Common fault or time to bin the card? Any other tricks?

you dont have to turn the display on to change the aperture use the command dial

The D40 has a combined mechanical and CCD electronic shutter whereas the D40x has a mechanical one.

What this means in practice is that the D40 will flash-sync up to 1/500 with a flash on the hotshoe or up to 1/4000 using a neutered ttl cable, whereas the D40x will only flash-sync to 1/200.

Of course if you don't use a flash it makes not a jot of difference
